Job Description:

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Library Affairs, the Collection Management Librarian is responsible for the overall development and management of the Library's collections in all formats. This position is a full-time, tenure-track faculty, 12-month continuing appointment.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) is a nationally ranked public research university with a population of over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Morris Library holds more than three million volumes and subscribes to a wide range of electronic resources and databases. The library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA), and the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI). Librarians at SIUC are faculty and are covered by collective bargaining.

Examples of Duties

* Responsible for the overall development and management of the Library's collections in all formats.

* Ensure that collections support SIUC's academic and research programs in all disciplines.

* Establish criteria and standards for all aspects of the Library's collections and oversee the Library's collection policies.

* Develop planning and budgetary recommendations, including fiscal allocations; monitor and ensure the efficient expenditure of the Library's materials budgets in consultation with the Associate Dean of Library Affairs and others.

* Serve as the lead negotiator and the primary contact with vendors and publishers, including the Library's contracted bookseller.

* Consult with the Associate Dean of Library Affairs on new purchases of packages/databases and cancellation projects.

* Manage general collection funds and endowments.

* Collaborate with the Cataloging & Metadata Librarian and the Electronic Resources Librarian to ensure efficient and effective expenditure of collections budget.

* Collaborate with liaison librarians to assess the library resource needs of faculty, students and other library users.

* Develop and implement training programs, and coordinate and provide leadership for liaisons' collection development activities.

* Provide data for reports and analyses related to collection development and maintenance as required by university offices and external agencies, including accreditation bodies.

* Plan and oversee collection assessment.

* Work collaboratively and productively with others in Library Affairs.

* Represent SIUC Library Affairs in state, regional, and national groups that conduct collection- related activities.

General Responsibilities:

* Maintain service contributions to Library Affairs, the University, and/or the profession.

* Continue development in librarianship and subject specialty through research contributions (including published research), conference and/or workshop attendance, and/or other educational activities.

* Participate in scholarly activities, creative work, and/or communication initiatives.


Minimum Qualification:

ALA accredited Master's of Library Science/Information Science, by date of hire.

* Knowledge of current issues and trends in library collection development, copyright, and licensing.

* Demonstrated experience working with an online library system.

* Excellent oral and written communication skills.

* Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

* Demonstrated expertise in using Excel for data analysis.

* Experience negotiating with vendors and publishers.

* For appointment at the Assistant Professor rank: minimum of 2 years professional experience in collection development in an academic library; interest in and potential to meet established Library Affairs criteria for promotion and tenure, including professional service and published research.

* For appointment at the Associate Professor rank: minimum 4 years professional experience in collection development in an academic library; a sustained record of peer-reviewed research and publications, including a record of professional service at state, regional, or national levels.

Preferred Qualifications:

Additional Master's degree.

* Demonstrated leadership ability.

* Experience with Ex Libris Alma.

* Experience using specialized tools for the analysis of collections (e.g., Alma Analytics).

* Experience with scholarly communications initiatives, including management of an institutional repository.

* Experience working in a team environment.

* Record of successful achievements in grant applications and awards.

* Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices and a willingness to actively contribute to creating a more inclusive workplace.
