Summary:

Tetra Tech is currently seeking a Principal Environmental Science Consultant (Consultant) with high-level expertise in developing innovative natural resource planning, survey, and permitting solutions for clients through strategic evaluation of overall client goals and regulatory frameworks. The Consultant responsibilities include developing and managing a team of multi-disciplinary specialists in the biological, social, physical, and industrial health sciences and planning and moving projects efficiently to completion. The Consultant will participate in and oversee team development of strategic solutions for clients that are innovative and transcend commodity-level services provided by our competitors. Success will be measured in the Consultants ability to provide technically advanced scientific, engineering, and sustainability focused strategic assessment, planning, and design services that result in long term client relationships, provided value, and meet your personal and team's pre-defined revenue goals.

The Consultant will provide strategic regional leadership, business development, program management, and personnel recruiting and mentoring to facilitate growth of Tetra Tech's environmental science group practices. These practices include a full suite of natural resource disciplines performing baseline, compliance, planning, modeling, and permitting involving biological, air, water, and soil, as well as developing work opportunities in the industrial health sciences area. The service will be focused on, but not limited to the Southwestern U.S. including coastal regions of California. The position will work to integrate other technical services offered by Tetra Tech into the Consultant's portfolio of clients promoting a full-service offering making our services indispensable to our clients' businesses. Similarly, the biological, physical, and health science group resources may be leveraged by other Tetra Tech client and practice managers to expand Tetra Tech's full-service offerings. Identifying vertically integrated and cross discipline solutions to assist clients in attaining their goals utilizing Tetra Tech's diverse group of scientists, engineers, planners, and strategists is a key position responsibility.

Your Role:


  • Rapidly integrate yourself into Tetra Tech to understand and leverage Tetra Tech's diverse resources and service offerings in your associated practice areas. Collaborate with operations and technical focused team members to advance business development, program and project implementation, and practice area strategies and goals. Work with operational leadership to define your key technical practice areas, supporting team composition and size, and revenue growth goals.
  • Provide senior leadership support to Tetra Tech's overall natural resource, permitting, and planning practice with a focus on your specific area of expertise and associated emphasis on air, environmental health, and physical resource sciences. Look for innovative ways Tetra Tech can provide value-added and sustainability orientated assessment, modeling, permitting solutions to our clients that transcend the old way of doing things.
  • Build, lead, and mentor a technical team of biological, physical, social scientists, planners, and as appropriate health scientists across your home operating unit in Tetra Tech. With team growth, delegate appropriate duties to team members allowing your team members to grow in their career and leadership responsibilities.
  • Participate in Tetra Tech's Key Account Management Program, industry initiatives, and resource practice related strategy groups.
  • Serve as the Senior Account Lead for one or more client accounts identified as strategic pursuits.
  • Actively participate with local, regional, and global project teams to develop strategic client and opportunity capture plans and successfully implement those plans. Work toward being known within Tetra Tech as a go-to team for your core resource services. Other activities will include RFP management, proposal preparation, contract negotiation, and project implementation.
  • Engage and retain relationships with commercial industrial, financial, law and energy firms, state, federal, and local government, and private equity and other investment groups to facilitate opportunity generation.
  • Capitalize on industry relationships/expertise/professional network to maintain and establish new relationships and ensure they are managed for growth.
  • Manage programs and projects and ensure and/or monitor vertically integrated/cross discipline projects resulting from your strategic business development efforts are being performed to Tetra Tech's project management standards.
  • Attract and assist in recruiting key talent who fit with Tetra Tech's entrepreneurial culture and team approach.

Qualifications:


  • B.S. or more advanced degree in a biological or physical science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Fifteen years of program/project management direct experience in the natural resource (biological and physical) compliance, permitting, and baseline assessment practice area with more recent experience providing innovative sustainable solutions that set apart you as a strategic partner to your clients.
  • Expertise and/or strong understanding in developing strategic plans and solutions for clients across market segments for key natural resources including botany, fish and wildlife, surface and groundwater, cultural resources, soils, air, and geology and the implementation of those strategies in permitting, industry operations, and data management solutions. Basic understanding of and experience with industrial health science related issues.
  • Experience working across disciplines to develop interdisciplinary solutions for a variety of market segments and cross selling services outside of the candidate's technical focus area.
  • Dynamic, self-starter with successful experience with program-level leadership, business development, and strategic planning focused on the commercial, industrial, and government clients.
  • Direct proven account growth/management experience on accounts approaching or greater than $1M.
  • Strong network of clients and long-standing, established relationships.
  • Experience working collaboratively with the California Coastal Commission and other regulatory agencies to successfully receive approvals on key infrastructure and mitigation projects.
  • Ability to delegate project and operation tasks to more junior team members to effectively utilize candidate's strengths is essential.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing project finances to strong profitability and team workload, mentoring, and technical quality.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication with demonstrated ability developing and delivering effective presentations to customers and management.
  • Holds certifications or approvals from key regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and state agencies required to perform and/or oversee surveys, delineations, and other discipline specific requirements.
  • A Pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Target salary range: $150,000 to $185,000. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
