Obsidian Solutions Group (OSG) is seeking a UAS Program Lead - Drone Pilot to join the team!

The Marine Corps Tactics and Operations Group (MCTOG) mission is to provide standardized advanced training and certification to Ground Combat Element (GCE) Operations Officers, Operations Chiefs, and select other GCE training specialists in GCE operations, combined arms planning and integration, and unit readiness planning at the company, battalion, and regiment levels to support GCE Training and Readiness (T&R) events.

MCTOG provides support to its higher headquarters, MAGTF Training Command (MAGTFTC), when requested. MAGTFTC conducts a Service Level Training Exercise, the Integrated Training Exercise (ITX), which includes requirements for design and development of scenario(s), and observation, assessment, and mentorship of training unit staffs. MCTOG is providing this support.

There is a critical need to assist the MAGTFTC in the assessment and after-action review and analysis of the execution of training during the ITX. One of several end states for the training is a timely, thorough, and informative assessment of the performance of training units' tactics, techniques, and procedure (TTPs) during maneuver operations across multiple ranges. OSG provides a Drone Support Team to fly unmanned aircraft with video-capable payloads to observe and record the actions of Marines during day and night training. The Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Program Lead will be a key player on that team.

The UAS Program Lead shall have significant drone flight operations experience while simultaneously operating a video camera payload. To fulfill the role as a UAS Program Lead, the incumbent will develop, analyze, organize, plan, and execute the aerial videography of military training exercises in a safe and timely manner. Working within a team, the incumbent shall support the development and provision of immediate (within an hour) edited video feedback to the training unit trainers for their use in debrief and after-action reviews and provide a copy of all video footage in some form of external memory storage device (DVD, thumb drive, SD Card, etc.) or cloud delivery for their later viewing and analysis.

The UAS Program Lead will serve to support the staff of MAGTFTC, Tactical Training Exercise Control Group (TTECG), aka the ‘Coyotes', Mountain Warfare Training Center (MWTC), and Marine Corps Tactics and Operations Group (MCTOG) as required. The incumbent will work with the Drone Support Team, and the Exercise Design and Control Staffs to develop a video support plan to enable the employment of the drone system in the most effective methods for capturing critical actions on the ground, while adhering to range and airspace safety regulations.

Requirements:
  • Provide UAS program leadership to the members of the Drone Support Team, which may consist of rotating group of UAS pilots and videographers. This includes ensuring all members are aware of responsibilities and capable of performing them, have received appropriate range safety classes, are wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and are supervised as appropriate when in the range training area.
  • Develop, implement, and update UAS program checklists, operating procedures, safety plans, software updates, warranty tracking, maintenance plans, FAA registration, insurance plans, and any other documentation determined necessary to support the mission.
  • In conjunction with the Program Management team, coordinate the staffing and travel requirements of the Drone Support Team to support the government requirements.
  • Coordinate with Range Control, TTECG, and FAA (as required) for range access and appropriate air space scheduling/deconfliction to support the mission.
  • Coordinate with TTECG and MAGTFTC to confirm training unit event schedules requiring support to their AAR process.
  • Operate unmanned aerial vehicle / system (UAV/S) with video recording capability in support of Marine training. Incorporate ground based cameras to capture footage.
  • Plan for optimal employment of the UAS in support of the training unit's ground scheme of maneuver to capture the best footage for use in the TTECG-led AAR.
  • Incorporate PLI capture into video support collection.
  • Provide continuous video coverage of training event for up to four hours, which may require overlapping and simultaneous drone employment given standard drone battery life limitations.
  • Develop contingency plans in the event of drone malfunction.
  • Record key events during training event based on direction from Coyotes via radio.
  • Anticipate and communicate drone operating parameters to the government client as required; should wind, illumination, dust, or other environmental conditions preclude the use of drone support, inform all points of contact as soon as possible.
  • Download drone video footage to a computer for subsequent editing. Collaborate with video editors for optimum production.
  • Coordinate as necessary with other non-OSG contract personnel for the synchronization and incorporation of position location information (PLI) data recordings into the AAR products provided to TTECG.
  • Support First Person View (FPV) Drone Training program implementation with Obsidian drone equipment and team members.
  • Make recommendations to Program Management team on ways to improve video collection and delivery, to include manpower adjustments, equipment purchases, and ideas for research & development.

Certification

  • Incumbent must hold a current FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
  • A minimum of 100 hours of logged flight hours as a remote pilot.
  • A combination of education and experience that displays the requisite skillset is considered.
