The Neuroscience of Learning Lab in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Assistant. Under the direction of Professors John Freeman and Krystal Parker, the Research Assistant will conduct behavioral and neurophysiological experiments using rats. The position will also include lab management activities such as maintaining supplies and developing protocols. This position supports a collaborative research project among the Freeman (https://freeman.lab.uiowa.edu/) and Parker (https://parker.lab.uiowa.edu/) labs to investigate the brain mechanisms of behavioral timing.
This is a two-year specified-term position with the possibility of extension based on funding and lab needs.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct neuroscience and behavioral experiments with rats.
Conduct procedures on rats including surgery and injections.
Conduct experiments using neurophysiology, optogenetics, behavioral testing and preparing brain sections.
Record, organize, and prepare data for statistical analysis.
Maintain lab supplies.
Update animal and safety protocols.

Education Required
Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, psychology, biology or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Qualifications
Experience conducting experiments with rats or mice.
Experience working with Excel, Word, and MATLAB software.
Ability to communicate productively (written and verbal) and function at a high level within a research team.
Attention to detail and the ability to organize records in lab notebooks.
Desired Qualifications
Experience with optogenetics or electrophysiology.
Ability to work with small instruments and equipment.
Experience coding in MATLAB, Python, or R.
Experience using confocal microscopes.
Proficiency with Adobe Illustrator.
