Epilepsy Monitoring Unit - Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist (100%) at University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa

Job Description:

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is seeking a full-time Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist (END Tech)to perform complex patient care procedures, such as continuous video electroencephalogram (EEG) Monitoring, developing and importing patient specific montages and digital spectral array, and analyzing ongoing data to assist during nuclear medicine procedures. The END Technologist will perform these duties in both the Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) and Adult EMU, but will also be trained and expected to perform them in Intensive Care Units (ICU) and patient bedside as needed.



Job Duties to Include:

  • Perform a broad range of complex electroneurodiagnostic procedures requiring independent judgment and initiative to elicit and display information for use by interpreting physicians. Procedures to include: continuous Video EEG Monitoring, developing, and importing patient specific montages and digital spectral array, analyzing ongoing data to assist during nuclear medicine procedures, maintaining age related competencies.
  • Interpret on-going data and prerecorded data, notifying appropriate staff when indicated.
  • Participate in on-call/call back coverage.
  • Maintain recordings, transferring data, data base and network archival system.
  • Attend multidisciplinary Epilepsy Surgery Case Conference
  • Participate in continuing educational opportunities maintaining certification requirements.
  • Responsible for quality control of equipment, recognizing malfunction, trouble shooting and/or alerting appropriate staff.
  • Serve as a resource to faculty, staff, patients, and the community providing expert knowledge and behavioral skills that impact clinical practice and patient outcomes.
  • Participate in instruction of END students, including evaluating and advising. Assist with instruction of electrophysiology fellows, medical residents, and other staff in methods of END technology. Participate in continuing educational opportunities by attending meetings, participating in professional organizations and review of journals and publications, actively participate in UIHC epilepsy Case Conference
  • Assure and maintain competency in expertise in area of specialization as a requirement for NAEC Level IV accreditation.
  • Assist with research activities as directed by medical directors.

Schedule: This position works primarily rotating overnight shifts. Typical shifts will be 10 hours. Participation in the rotating oncall/callback schedule and rotating holiday schedule is required. May include rotating weekends.



Supervision Received: Supervision received by EEG/EMU Lab Supervisor or designee.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of a 24-month END Technology program or other applicable program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Eligible for certification by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic Technologists, American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists, or other applicable nationally recognized certifying agency. Certification within nine (9) months following the start of employment is required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.
  • General computer skills
  • Ability to multitask

Desired Qualifications

  • 3 years' experience working in Electroneurodiagnostic Technology
  • Experience in an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)
  • Long-Term Monitoring Certification (CLTM)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven ability to multi-task, prioritize and coordinate multiple duties
  • Management experience
