Position Scope



The Division Chief reports to the Chair and the administration of the University of Miami (UM) Department of Medicine (DOM). The Chief is responsible for the academic, clinical, fiscal, and operational management of the division. This includes education, research, and patient care conducted by faculty in the division. The Chief is expected to work collegially and collaboratively with other members of the Department, other Departments and Centers, School of Medicine (SOM), University of Miami Medical Group (UMMG), and affiliated Hospital entities in promoting the various missions.



General Core Duties



  • Develop and coordinate short- and long-term goals of the division, ensuring that they are in concert with the goals of the Department, SOM, UMMG, and where applicable with affiliated Hospital entities.


  • Promote collaboration amongst internal and external peers in research, teaching, advocacy, and scholarly activities.


  • Provide leadership in area of expertise to the Department and its affiliated institutions.


  • Maintain program accreditation, ensuring that the service meets or exceeds local and national standards of outcome performance.


  • Mentor faculty, including developing and implementing objectives for faculty career development.


  • Set annual expectations for each faculty member in the areas of clinical, research, education, and citizenship.


  • Ensure each member of the division receives an annual performance evaluation.


  • Ensure faculty are compliant with guidelines for credentialing, clinical documentation, HIPAA, external activities, effort reporting, and all other relevant SOM, UMMG, and University guidelines.


  • Attend Division Chief, Faculty, and leadership meetings.


  • Collaborate with affiliate Hospital leadership in the development and execution of clinical programs and delivery of high quality patient care.





Clinical Core Duties



  • Develop priorities for growth of clinical programs to meet patient needs, enhance quality of care and implement innovations in care. This clinical care should also support departmental and research efforts. Efficiency, volumes, and excellent service to patients and referrers in the outpatient arena will be a high priority. The organization of outpatient care may also involve outreach, contracts with other organizations, or collaboration with or other UM affiliated entities.


  • Provide supervision of medical services and ensure appropriateness, quality, and safety of patient care within the scope of the division.


  • Ensure faculty and staff meet their annual clinical productivity targets.





Research Core Duties



  • Develop priorities for growth in academic programs that may include translational, population/outcomes, or basic bench research. This will entail recruitment of new faculty and development and mentoring of current faculty.


  • Ensure that the scope and focus of research performed within the Division is consistent with the mission and strategic direction of UM DOM.


  • Ensure that faculty minimum sponsored funding expectations are met.





Education Core Duties



  • Ensure the development, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate education programs in the Division.


  • Ensure the participation of Division members in the Education mission, including clinical and didactic teaching as well as mentorship (career guidance and scholarly projects) with learners.


  • Representation from each Division in Departmental education committees and learner recruitment is expected.


  • Support continuing professional development/medical education for faculty and staff.





Financial/Operational Core Duties



  • Collaborate with the Department's central administration to manage divisional finances.


  • Formal responsibility of all Departmental financial and human resource activities resides with the Department's Senior Administrative Officer (SAO). A formal reporting relationship, therefore, exists between the lead administrative position in your division and the SAO. Similarly, a close collaborative relationship is expected to be developed between the Division Chief and the SAO as well.


  • Oversee the financial status of the Division, including annual budget development with Department Administration, monitoring adherence to budget in all areas, including clinical and research income and expenditures.


  • Ensure effective and efficient operation of the division.


  • Adjust expenditures and staffing as needed to address changes in resources.


  • Oversee the effective utilization of divisional space.





Quality/Outcomes Core Duties



  • Lead and support formal QI initiatives within the Division, Department, and affiliated Hospitals.


  • Actively support QI initiatives and other activities necessary to meet quality outcome measures for the SOM and affiliate Hospital. This includes training and operational changes required by Health Reform legislation (e.g. PQRS, MIPS).
