MAIN FUNCTION:


The Pharmacy Technician I is responsible for performing a variety of duties in the pharmacy including routine filling or refilling of medication and supply orders, packaging, clerical, and other standardized duties.


This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.


This position reports to the Pharmacy Technician Supervisor and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.



ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Fill Surgery, Recovery Room, or other orders for supplies, standard medications, etc.

  • Deliver patient medications, standard stock, and/or other pharmaceutical items to patient units.

  • Maintain prescribed usage, stocking, control or other detailed records. Restock and/or load medications into Automated Dispensing Machines (ADM) units on each nursing unit as needed, or per refill schedule. Deliver controlled drugs to the nursing units as directed by a Pharmacist.

  • Check incoming purchased medications, supplies, etc., for conformity to invoice or packing slips. Report shortages, discrepancies, damaged goods, etc. Place in proper storage rotating stock daily.

  • Prepare IV solutions utilizing aseptic techniques and following USP 797 Standards.

  • Package bulk medication or supplies into required form for dispensing. Restock working storage areas from main bulk storage. Reorder stock medications and supplies as necessary.

  • Perform monthly inspections of all drug storage areas, ADM's of the hospital under the direction of the Director, Pharmacy management, or staff pharmacists, following guidelines as mandated by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

  • Maintain various records, reports and files. Maintain proficiency with multiple pharmacy software systems. Maintain strict confidentiality at all times.

  • Answer telephone; take or relay messages; answer routine questions. Requisition department supplies and assist in ordering. Rotate shifts as assigned if necessary to maintain department function.

  • Maintain established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, confidentiality, quality improvement program, compliance, safety, infection control, and environmental standards.

  • Maintain professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences or in-services, professional affiliations, or journals to stay abreast of current trends in field of expertise.

  • Meet annual competency and retraining requirements.

  • Attend meetings as required.

  • Perform other functions/duties as requested.






Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:



  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • Current Massachusetts Pharmacy Technician Registration required

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) preferred

  • Minimum of six (6) months to one (1) year experience as a hospital pharmacy technician preferred
