The incumbent will report to the Utilities and Technical Services Team Leader. They will have a broad operations, maintenance and engineering responsibilities for the CoGen Plant, used for providing power and steam to plant operations. This includes two Gas Turbines with Generators, one Heat Recovery Steam Generator, steam turbine, mill switchgear, and associated equipment. The position is also responsible for managing the process air system, river pumps, influent water treatment plant, and the wastewater treatment plant. Environmental compliance, varying mill demand for steam and power, varying gas and imported power costs, and coordination with mill operations can add complexity to the challenges faced. The incumbent provides leadership for teams which typically include members from several functional groups. Objectives typically are focused at the Asset level, but some are Product System and Mill-wide in nature.




Responsibilities:




  • Provide leadership that supports the elimination of all occupational injuries and illnesses, while controlling loss due to accidents and incidents. Develop and maintain safety systems in accordance with K-C loss control management while leading teams to complete safety objectives and ensure a safe and productive work environment. Create and support the environment that removes barriers to success. Fully comply with corporate loss management policies as well as government safety and health regulations. Effectively implement the facility EHS Management System




  • Coordinate and lead the overall Utilities' operations to ensure the achievement of asset objectives for product quality, productivity, cost of manufacture, and customer service. Ensure that the physical assets including facilities, machinery and equipment are properly operated, maintained and upgraded and that physical inventories of parts, materials and supplies are controlled to their lowest operating levels. Achieve customer service standards while improving material flow costs through implementing effective managing processes/systems for material and supply sourcing, inventory control, warehouse managing, and effective machine scheduling




  • Develop capital improvement plan for the asset base. Identify opportunities for investment. Achieve significant reduction of defects and variability by implementing effective process control and workmanship managing systems. Work with business units to determine required quality improvements and develop plans to achieve this improvement. Achieve productivity commitments for world class performance across all operating assets focusing on equipment and process reliability, minimizing waste, and running at target speeds




  • Evolve the state of asset (operating) teams in a way that facilitates the participation and involvement of all employees to pursue continuous improvement in the processes and systems with which they work, as well as in their own personal development, work flexibility and output per hour




  • Establish and maintain working conditions and high levels of housekeeping, appearance, physical condition and sanitation that will ensure full compliance with Government regulations and Company policies and achievement of safety and good manufacturing practices objectives




  • Develop and maintain a favorable employee relations climate within the Utilities Team, which will result in all employees considering their mill a fair and equitable place of employment with opportunities for personal development advancement




  • Establish and maintain an optimum organization, with personnel plans that will ensure that the organization is adequately staffed with qualified, trained and motivated people to meet current and future requirements. Develop, check and adjust a resource plan that will ensure the development of all employees to the maximum of their potential. Inclusive in managing resources is to have accountability around the Union teams, CBA and working within those parameters for enhanced labor relationships as well as managing scheduling costs for the teams




  • Function with the Technical Services Team Leader in setting Utilities and Technical Services System policies, determining and directing overall long-range Asset activities




  • Ensure the effective application of internal control systems and procedures applicable to the functional areas of responsibility by providing management direction and support to the implementation, maintenance, and audit of corporate, company, and mill internal control policies, instructions, and procedures

Required (essential for the job):




  • Requires knowledge and ability typically associated with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering




  • Working knowledge of KC Safety requirements and EHS systems and standards




  • 3 years of leadership experience




  • Broad knowledge and significant experience in operations/maintenance and project management




  • Ability to provide coaching for performance and career development to the hourly operations and maintenance teams




  • Ability to manage vendor/supplier relationships in a positive and cost effective manner




  • Lead the development of Platform objectives and goals and action plans to achieve them




  • Manage in an environment where success is achieved more through leading others than possessing technical knowledge




  • Manage to a planning horizon of one to five years




  • The ability to lead organizational change, build relationships and make good use of available resources




  • Lean experience with Strategy Deployment, 4-step problem solving, visual management, TPM and 5 S




  • Able to confront problems and handle conflict




  • Able to problem solve and set priorities and generate new ideas and improved ways of working while maintaining effective control




  • Able to demonstrate "World Class Leadership Practices" as well as the KC One Behaviors






Travel:




  • Up to 15% travel may be required






Preferred (not essential, but desired):




  • Experience with boiler operations and power generation




  • 6 years of operations experience with at least 3 years of leadership experience




  • Have experience in more than one facility, sector and function and will have developed a working knowledge of sector staff activities




  • Worked in High Performance Work System
