Overview

The salary range for this position is $7,500 - $8,333.34 per month ($90,000 - $100,000 per year) depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable.

This position is open until filled, with first review of candidates to begin June 11th.

KPBS serves the greater San Diego community with informative, cultural, entertaining and educational television, radio, and digital programming. KPBS TV/FM is the public television and radio station for San Diego. Licensed to San Diego State University, KPBS supports and furthers the university’s educational and community service mission by informing, enlightening and empowering its audience. It does so not only by presenting national and locally produced programming of value to its San Diego audience, but also by producing programming about San Diego and its people for distribution nationwide.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Director of News and Editorial Strategy (DNES), the Arts Editor supervises the KPBS Arts team and leads the creation and presentation of Arts content projects with a digital first and multimedia lens. The Arts Editor will ensure accuracy and effective packaging of all Arts content on kpbs.org, digital properties, as well as video and audio presentation while upholding the highest journalistic standards.

The Arts Editor coordinates arts coverage in partnership with KPBS newsroom leadership for digital, social, video and audio platforms and leads special projects that innovate and seek to deepen connections with the community around arts engagement. The Arts Editor will lead the creation of a new Arts podcast, edit the weekly Arts Newsletter and the Arts in the Open series. The Arts Editor supervises a team of journalists, including two reporters, a podcast producer, a freelance video journalist and web producer.

The Arts Editor understands how to leverage social networks to grow audiences for the arts hub on kpbs.org and broadcast platforms, emphasizing the value of connecting audiences with our content and engaging them in conversation. This position builds connections with arts and culture organizations and local artists throughout San Diego and Imperial Counties to help grow and diversify KPBS’ arts coverage while also expanding audiences across social networks, online and on-air. Under the supervision of the Director of News and Editorial Strategy (DNES), the Arts Editor helps set and implement goals for the Arts team to measure success, and shares knowledge and best practices with all journalists in the newsroom.

The Arts Editor is responsible for but not limited to:

Editorial Leadership (80%)

  • Supervise Arts team including hiring, training, mentoring, evaluating performance, assigning and directing work.
  • Guide and assist Arts reporters and producers in developing and planning for special in-depth projects that have multimedia features.
  • Work with KPBS editors, web producers and reporters, to ensure the timely editing and release of Arts stories.
  • When big Arts news breaks, work in coordination with KPBS editors, web producers and reporters to assign and edit web updates and liveblogs.
  • Oversee and develop the production of a new KPBS Arts Podcast and collaborate with station content leaders to set reasonable goals for audience and growth.
  • Supervise the Arts Podcast producer to ensure the podcast has the resources needed to achieve goals.
  • Oversee and edit the weekly Arts Newsletter with the Arts Reporter/Multimedia producer.
  • Assure that content on KPBS’ Arts site and kpbs.org and social media accounts is up to date, accurate, legally sound and of high quality.
  • Supervise the development of digital first products aimed at reaching new audiences.
  • Supervise the arts web producer in collecting, creating, managing and maintaining content for kpbs.org, as well as social media.

Administration (15%)

  • Collaborate and coordinate with local arts and culture organizations to stay on top of trends and up and coming artists and events.
  • In coordination with the news leadership, implement the news division’s administrative processes for direct reports.
  • Manage Arts team personnel, budgets, and grant/donor reports.
  • Actively engage as a member of the KPBS Leadership team, station wide, as well as participate in mandatory trainings and professional development
  • Manage budgets as effectively as possible, and collaborate with the Director of News and Editorial Strategy to develop spending priorities on staffing and equipment needs each year.
  • Apprise staff of errors and necessary corrections and audience feedback as necessary.

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

  • Represent KPBS at events and community activities as well as attend arts and culture events throughout the region to stay connected with the beat.
  • Participate in KPBS’ fundraising activities and participate in KPBS events regularly.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of journalistic and ethical standards and practices and the editorial/technical/logistical processes required to create multimedia content.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster diversity & inclusion in the workplace.
  • Demonstrated excellence in news judgment and ability to edit and publish on all platforms on deadline.
  • Impeccable knowledge of grammar, spelling and AP Style.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; reliably meets deadlines.
  • Ability to lead, motivate and supervise a team.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of good management practices; superior people and mentoring skills.
  • Ability to successfully engage audiences via social media.
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
  • Proven ability to consistently work well and collaborate with newsroom colleagues as well as other departments at KPBS to create engagement opportunities.
  • Ability to respect the diverse constituencies at KPBS in the community and within the public broadcasting system.
  • Ability to prioritize resources and ensure KPBS’ Arts coverage represents the diverse community we serve.
  • Ability to work well independently and make sound decisions under fast-paced conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow posted work rules and procedures.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field, or additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis
  • Four years full-time professional, progressively responsible experience in journalism or a related field; two of which are experience editing and supervising a team of reporters and/or producers in a newsroom

Preferred Qualifications and Special Skills

  • Demonstrated experience creating content for all platforms (digital, social, audio and video, visual)
  • Demonstrated experience building an audience through social networks (Instagram, YouTube,Facebook and beyond)
  • Experience working with content management systems
  • Experience using social and Google analytics to determine ROI
  • Six years of journalism experience; four years of journalism experience plus two years of supervisory experience.
  • Previous experience covering arts and culture
  • Knowledge of the San Diego Arts and Culture scene

  • Candidates must reside in California, or be willing to relocate, and live within a commutable distance to the SDSU campus at the time of hire.
