Job Description

The Lead Welder is responsible for fitting,welding and polishing work assigned to the fabrication team by the Shop Lead or Fabrication Manager. The Lead welder will take point in activities that involve fabrication, pipe welding, and administrative tasks to support the production and manufacturing of specialized water treatment equipment.


  • Conducts on-site surveys of work to be performed.


  • Establishes priorities for the shop, plans, assigns, trains, and directs work of the weld team


  • Computes time and material costs by estimating labor hours and material ordering


  • Welds stainless steel piping using GTAW.


  • Welds bracing using (predominantly) GTAW, (rarely) SMAW, GMAW and other methods as required.


  • Fabricates parts to build specialized equipment.


  • Ensures welds are made to specification.


  • Reads blueprints to facilitate the building of specialized equipment.


  • Cuts various materials using saw, torch, plasma and other methods.


  • Layout, fit, weld and finish components per drawing.


  • Ability to work in a team environment.


Qualifications


  • High School Diploma / GED required, a technical degree is preferred.


  • Minimum of 5 years of work-related experience with fabrication (fit up and welding) of metal piping, frames and braces.


  • AWS or ASME certification required.


  • Experience with GTAW and GTAW welding processes.


  • Experience in stainless steel manufacturing preferred.


ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:


  • Capable of performing physical acts such as lifting, climbing and manual dexterity


  • Must be certified in forklift operation within 90 days of employment


  • Must have minimum welding tools-shield, gloves, leathers, basic tools


Desired Characteristics:


  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in pipefitting, fabrication, and operation of drill press, belt sander, band saw, ironworker and bench grinder


  • Experience in reading P&IDs


  • AWS or ASME Welding certification


  • Knowledgeable and committed to Environmental, Health & Safety practices


  • Knowledge of basic inventory control concepts


  • Knowledge of basic quality control concepts


  • Excellent communication skills


  • Diligent


  • Customer focus


  • Teamwork


  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral,diagram, or schedule form.
