The Newborn Screening Program is a state mandated, public health initiative that involves testing dried blood spots collected from the heel of every baby born in Indiana. Through screening, we are able to detect various genetic and metabolic disorders so that treatment can be initiated prior to symptoms.
Job Summary
This position involves entry of demographic data about the baby, used to interpret results, and allows us to report all of this data to the Indiana DOH, as well as the hospital/midwife submitting the screen.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
Completes data entry while maintaining quality assurance and quality control through established procedures to identify and resolve data errors.
Contacts submitters to obtain missing and inaccurate data, or samples needing recollection.
Responds to and resolves queries in a timely fashion.
Assists in sending patient reports and follow-up letters to appropriate clients.
Sends out "kit" supplies to participating birthing centers.
Separates samples appropriately for short and long-term storage.
Helps with basic clerical tasks including filing, copying and faxing.
Demonstrates knowledge the screening process, tests involved and rules/laws that govern the program. Follows all SOP's to ensure a consistent, quality approach to all tasks. Participates in the development and modification of processes and assists in establishing good workflow.
Works with the Department of Health and all state designated partners to ensure timely follow-up and treatment through a comprehensive follow-up program.
Participates as a collaborative partner in a team-based environment.
Completes data management activities including data collection, data entry, and preparation and maintenance of regulatory documents. Maintains quality assurance and quality control through established procedures and by identifying and resolving data errors.
Extracts data from source documents and completes electronic case report forms.
Contacts outside healthcare providers to obtain subject records and information.
Assists team with creation of source document tools.
Assists with document preparation for audits.
Creates and maintains regulatory documents.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
High school diploma or equivalent (such as GED or HSED).
Preferred
Associate's degree in Medical Administration, business, or related field.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
2 years of experience in a medical setting, working with medical records, or related field.
SKILLS
Required
Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information.
Working Conditions / Demands
The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
Work Location
Indianapolis, Indiana
Work Hours
The NBS Lab is open Monday - Saturday, 6:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., with the heaviest workload on Mondays and Fridays. This role requires availability during this timeframe.
Early morning hours are most desirable.
This position has the expectation of working 2 Saturdays a month.
