GENERAL DESCRIPTION


The Production Engineer supports the audio and video technology needs for the recording studios and functions of the Frost School of Music (FSOM), including software installation and maintenance, wiring, and setup of equipment. This person is responsible for technical design and troubleshooting for event and recorded productions. This person also contributes to the maintenance, configuration, and design of multimedia production systems as it applies to FSOM operations. The Production Systems Engineer will leverage knowledge of existing systems and services, as well as capabilities available in the marketplace, to create the most effective solutions to meet the media and live event needs of the School. The candidate must use independent discretion and judgment to prioritize tasks and provide recommendations regarding issues. The Production Engineer will report to the Director of Live Production Services.


The position requires a high level of independent proficiency in setting up and operating audio and video production equipment for recording studios, concert halls and other FSOM facilities. Work involves performing at a variety of interior and exterior locations for the production of live or recorded events, student and faculty projects, and other special productions. The individual will often work with students and must exhibit an ability to train and mentor volunteers of various skills levels and to interact with faculty and staff in reinforcing School policies, practices, and procedures. This position requires a flexible work schedule to accommodate coverage for evening and/or weekend productions and events.


Duties and Responsibilities


  • Provide ongoing maintenance, support, and hardware/software updates for all studio editing and recording systems; document all issues with equipment, software.

  • Responsible for the production of audio and video recording material for FSOM programs, Website, social media platforms and other FSOM properties

  • Provides the support for set up, troubleshooting, operating, and breaking down all equipment used for production and post-production of School events and programs

  • Manage schedule for all FSOM recording studios and halls, coordinate recording studio sessions and use of equipment for staff and faculty

  • Facilitate the daily operation and workflow usage of production equipment in the various media production facilities used by students, faculty and staff; provide technical and creative input regarding placement and type of microphones and/or audio needs, locations, use of movement and equipment. Support and advise student productions as needed

  • Responsible for exporting & publishing end product to various platforms for broadcast, Web, social media and mobile devices as needed

  • Maintains accurate records, logs and transcribing production activities for FSOM studios as required

  • Edits and assembles final audio/video recorded material; ensuring consistency and relevancy to production; monitoring technical quality of end product

  • Trains staff and students in proper use of audio and video equipment

  • Exercises independent judgment in the assembling and editing of recorded material for production to ensure quality by assessing audio and visual context, acting as a Producer/Director/Videographer in the field

  • Coordinates with department faculty and students to provide recommendations on the best use of equipment and facilities

  • Setup, maintain and provide initial guidance on the proper use of editing and recording systems

  • Provide ongoing maintenance, support, and hardware/software updates for all editing and recording systems; document all issues with equipment, software

  • Provide maintenance and repair of electronic equipment, including cables, microphones, and amps

  • Work closely with in-house recording engineers and staff to regularly inspect gear for damage and wear, and will respond to needs for troubleshooting and replacement of equipment

  • Troubleshoot equipment and perform diagnostic testing; responsible for contacting manufacturer or scheduling contracted vendor for repairs of damaged equipment; coordinate shipment of damaged equipment to manufacturer as required

  • Responsible for maintaining Keyboard/Class Piano Labs

  • Other duties as assigned



Skills and Abilities

  • Expert knowledge of video and audio production and postproduction work flow

  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment, report findings and make repairs of diagnostic findings

  • Proficiency in component level soldering preferred

  • Knowledge of Apple products required

  • Advanced knowledge of music/media production software, including but not limited to Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Sibelius, Ableton Live, Adobe Premier and/or Final Cut Pro is highly desirable

  • Familiarity with audio recording and processing equipment and processes; technical certification preferred from Novell, Microsoft, or comparable certification (ie: CNE, MCSE or equivalent, ProTools, Sibelius, or other DWS and Music notation software)

  • Good planning, scheduling, and multitasking skills

  • Strong problem solving skills

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and must be able to communicate effectively both written and verbally

  • Must be comfortable working autonomously with little to no supervision, and in a team environment

  • Must have demonstrated organizational ability and follow-through

  • Must have demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic environment

  • Must have strong attention to detail

  • Must be able to lift at least 40-50 lbs without assistance, using proper lifting techniques and/or with assistance of a pallet jack. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time to perform repairs



Minimum Experience & Education Requirements




  • Bachelor's degree preferred in Information Technology, Engineering, Information Systems or related field.

  • Minimum 5 years of related experience.

  • Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
