Overview

The TROLLEY (TRansit Opportuntities for HeaLth, Livability, Exercise and EquitY) study is assessing longitudinal changes in multiple health and whether the outcomes change differentially according to light rail transit (LRT) exposure and sociodemographic factors. The Research Specialist II will join the School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences (ENS) in the College of Health and Human Services. ENS has evolved from its beginnings in 1914 as a physical education department to one that now offers undergraduate degrees in kinesiology and foods and nutrition; master’s degrees in athletic training, exercise physiology, and nutritional sciences; and a doctor of physical therapy degree. In addition to offering strong academic programs that help students develop practical skill in areas such as athletic training, fitness, physical therapy, and sports conditioning, the faculty are active researchers who study a range of topics that includes physical activity and behavioral nutrition.

This position is responsible for the collection and and processing of data and interacting with study participants. The incumbent will be responsible for administering surveys and interviews, entering measurement data, and controlling for data quality and processing data for analysis. The position will be required to complete participant measurement visits at multiple study locations on the UCSD La Jolla campus, equipping participants with study devices accelerometers and GPS) and instructing them in their use, initializing, downloading, and screening data from devices. This is a higher-level position for incumbents who have specialized experience with research devices to collect physical activity data.



Responsibilities

The Research Specialist II is responsible for but not limited to:

Data Collection (60%)

  • Administer study instruments and surveys.
  • Equip participants with study devices and instruct them in their use.
  • As needed, initialize, download and screen data from accelerometer and GPS devices.
  • Monitor and maintain measurement equipment inventory.
  • Maintain and update data protocols.

Data Processing (20%)

  • Review and edit data to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Ensure proper storage of accelerometer and GPS data.
  • Assist with data coding and processing.
  • Develop protocol for merging accelerometer and GPS files for analyses.
  • Assist with data visualizations and analyses.

Participant Retention (10%)

  • Track participant progress through the study.
  • Schedule measurement visits with participants
  • Complete reminder calls and answer participant inquiries.

Intern Supervision (10%)

  • Supervise and coordinate student interns and/or volunteer interns with tasks as needed.



Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Ability to interact effectively with co-workers and study participants.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to display organization, meet deadlines, display detail orientation, possess good judgment and common sense.

Project Specific Knowledge and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience processing data from devices used to objectively measure physical activity, including accelerometers and GPS devices
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using research databases.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in adhering to HIPAA and Human Research regulations.
  • Ability to independently organize, oversee, coordinate, and assume responsibility for a variety of ongoing data and evaluation projects.
  • Ability to analyze administrative problems and recommend effective action.

Preferred Skills

  • Basic statistical analysis
  • Qualitative research experience

Required Experience/Education

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year university.
  • Two years of experience with deployment and processing of data collected by accelerometers and GPS devices.
  • Experience developing and modifying RedCAP databases.
