Position Title: Graduate Assistant - Advising and Academic Resource Center (AARC)


Supervisor's Title & Department: Executive Director of AARC and Program and Advising Coordinator for First-Year Initiatives
Session: Academic, (August 12, 2024-May 16, 2025) This is a one-year placement with an opportunity for re-application and hire.
Hourly Rate: $17.00
Average hours per week: Up to 20 hours per week


Job Purpose: To provide direct service support to the AARC through individual work with students and assist with programming/marketing initiatives as needed. The position is responsible for advising about 75 first year students. The candidate must meet with these students on a regular basis and monitor their academic progress. This individual will also teach three sections of GS 104: College Success Strategies in the Fall semester and potentially up to three in the Spring semester. The candidate must have a commitment to upholding the academic mission and integrity of the University and the Advising and Academic Resource Center. The compensation is a stipend. Some weekend or evening hours may be required at certain points during the semester.
Essential Duties:
    Advise no more than 75 first year studentsMeet with advisees monthly and monitor their academic progressTeach three sections of GS 104: College Success Strategies in the Fall semesterTeach up to three sections of GS 104: College Success Strategies in the Spring semesterProvide academic coaching to no more than 25 academic warning/probation studentsAssist with programming and marketing of events and services.Be a contributing member of the Advising and Academic Resource CenterPerform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required Qualifications:
    Bachelor's degree.Applicants must be accepted into a graduate program at the University of Lynchburg.All candidates must have strong interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively with all members of the College community.The selected candidate must pass a background check that is satisfactory to the University.
