Job Description:

Job Summary



Performs all aspects of echocardiographic studies using ultrasonic equipment. Performs triage of examinations, orientation and preparation of patients; provides preliminary interpretation and presentation of data to attending physicians. Maintains echo equipment and laboratory. Documents procedures according to system and department standards.



Minimum Job Requirements




  • Associate in Science (AS) in Allied Health or related field (or) a certificate program in diagnostic ultrasound 



  • Eligible for registry in Ultrasound, RDCS or RCS by ARDMS or CCI, and pass within 6 months of hire.



  • At least one year of experience in Cardiac Clinical Ultrasound or a Pediatric Internship is required.



  • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment.


Job Specific Duties:


  • Analyzes, organizes data, performs calculations appropriate to study, and presents to physicians.

  • Using 3D image technology, reconstructs 3D images for use with Maternal/Fetal program patients. Follows proper protocols to reconstruct 3D images.

  • Collaborates with team and performs strains for electrophysiology.

  • Responsible for performing the following scans: transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE), cardiac TEE, epicardial scans, & intracardiac scans (ICE) per departmental protocol in a safe & efficient manner.

  • Responsible for precepting new sonographers and fellows; provides technical feedback and coaching to new sonographers.

  • Gathers patient history and documents in the electronic health record (EHR). Reviews charts to understand what the indications are for an echo.

  • Participates in the on call rotation and coverage for transesophageal echo (TEE) scans.

  • Responsible for accurately setting up technical charges for procedures, selecting correct ICD codes, and documenting patient’s electronic health record (EHR).

  • Restocks procedure rooms, orders appropriate supplies, and follows all infection control policies per departmental standards.

  • Troubleshoots any equipment issues, contacts biomed, and escalates any issues to leadership.

  • Performs environment of care rounds.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of all departmental policies and clinical protocols for each exam type.

  • Accountable to chart, review, and perform vitals for patients.

  • Assists medical staff with special/invasive procedures.

  • Enters patient demographics, verifies order to undertake examination, and performs echocardiographic study based on patient's medical history.

  • Explains examination procedure to patient and family to ensure comfort, understanding, and cooperation.

  • Instructs/teaches scanning techniques specific to pediatric cardiac anatomy.

  • Maintains echo equipment in good working condition and echo laboratories clean and well provisioned; reports malfunctions to supervisor as needed.

  • Participates in continuous quality improvement initiatives.

  • Performs fetal echocardiograms, performs calculations appropriate to study, and presents to physicians.

  • Maintains accountability by ensuring compliance thru timely completion of licensures, certifications, all competencies, health requirements (PPD, N95, Flu, etc.), and education requirements. F: Monthly-Quarterly/T: 2 hours/R: Individual

  • Maintains accountability and timekeeping expectations as outlined by MCHS Timekeeping and Attendance policy and procedures.  Ensures behavior is compliant with communication standards. F: Weekly/T: 2 hours/R: Individual


  • Ensures behavior meets and/or exceeds targeted service scores as measured by the Service Index and/or the internal departmental service survey. F: Daily/T: 8 hours/R: Individual
