Job Description:




Dean College's Oral Communication program is looking for dynamic, experienced, student-centered educators to teach Communication Fundamentals during the fall semester. The College seeks Adjunct Faculty who focus on experiential learning and active engagement in their classrooms. Adjuncts chosen to teach at Dean create a compelling and professional learning environment for students of diverse learning backgrounds.




We are seeking adjunct instructors to teach SPC 101: Communication Fundamentals on-campus during the day. This course is a core requirement for all students. In this introductory communication course, students explore principles and practice of communication in interpersonal, small group, and public communication situations. Students expand their understanding of communication and develop their skills and self-confidence in a variety of situations. Students are explicitly taught and expected to use digital communication tools include PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams, and more. Learning activities include preparing presentations, engaging in dialogues, providing feedback to others, and participating in group activities.




SPC 101: Communication Fundamentals is a 3-credit course that meets face-to-face for 2.5 hours/week. The adjunct pay rate is $3,300/section. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they teach. New adjuncts will join a team of communication instructors. The Oral Communication program provides a course charter with course objectives and learning outcomes, sample syllabi, and the course materials for the class. Successful candidates for this position must be comfortable using open educational resources as part of their instructional approach as this course has been designed with an OER classroom. All faculty are expected to make active use of the learning management system (Canvas) at least at a minimum level established by the college.




There are currently multiple sections available. The anticipated openings are scheduled as follows:





  • Monday/Wednesday/Friday, 12:00 to 12:50 pm and 2:00 to 2:50 pm

  • Monday/Wednesday, 2:00 to 3:15 pm and 3:30 to 4:45 pm

  • Tuesday/Thursday, 9:30 to 10:45 am and 2:00 to 3:15 pm






Requirements:





  • Master's degree in Communication Studies, Interpersonal Communication, Group Communication, or related field is required.

  • Experience teaching at the college level in person is required; experience teaching first- and second-year undergraduates is preferred.

  • Willing to follow the course outline provided by the program and comfortable using and/or willing to learn various digital tools for communicating and teaching.

  • Strong computer skills is required. Experience using technologies and/or strategies to enhance pedagogy is required.

  • Ability and willingness to be responsive and supportive to students through college online resources and digital tools is required.

  • Experience with or willingness to learn Canvas, our learning management system, and classroom media is required.

  • Expertise in learner-centered teaching is required. Experience and ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body with a variety of learning styles, required.
