Position Summary:

The Access Services Assistant II provides assistance to library users regarding the library's services and resources. This position performs a variety of tasks utilizing Fondren's library management system. The Access Services Assistant II will collect, shelve, re-shelve, and help shift the monograph collection. This position will identify materials requiring repair or replacement. The position requires enforcing library policy, staffing public service points, and providing excellent customer service and guidance. Will train and lead student assistants. May interview, hire and schedule student assistants. Will assist on various collection development projects, acquisitions projects, and other cross-departmental projects as requested. Performs other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate is familiar with utilizing the Library of Congress classification system, has excellent customer service skills, is comfortable troubleshooting problems, and thrives in a team work environment.

This position is exclusively on-site , necessitating all duties to be performed in-person at Fondren Library, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position with a hiring range of $15.72 - $18.08 per hour, contingent upon qualifications and experience. *Non-exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.

Minimum Requirements:


  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • 2+ years of customer service experience

    • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, may be substituted on an equivalent year-for-year basis

  • Skills

    • Advanced computer skills in a Windows-based operating environment
    • Computer skills related to library database and/or library management systems
    • Knowledge of library processes, procedures and terminology
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to quickly and effectively problem solve library user issues.
    • Proven success in following through and completing projects
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to details
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Ability to lead, train and guide others
    • Ability to prioritize, take initiative, and ownership of projects



Preferences:

  • Experience with Alma/Primo
  • Experience with cloud applications (Google mail, Google docs, Google sheets, Zoom, StackMaps, etc.)


Essential Functions:

  • Under the direction of the Access Services Supervisor for Shelving, establishes priorities and identifies and resolves library issues
  • Assists library users, both internal and external, with various library-related requests
  • Gathers library materials for reshelving. Scans material to collect statistical data, runs analytic reports to share information with department managers and others
  • Sorts and loads books onto book trucks for shelving
  • Shelves books, correcting misplaced books. Identifies books in need of repair or replacement
  • Updates physical and cloud-based mapping systems
  • Monitors Owlnet printers daily
  • Assists with room set ups for various conferences, lectures and speaker events
  • Staffs service points, providing exceptional service to our internal and external users
  • Leads and trains student workers including following proper policies and procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned


Additional Functions

  • Occasional Circulation desk coverage
  • Occasional work collaborating with other departments and assisting with various systems level projects
