We are seeking a Field Technician to conduct avian and eagle use surveys near Deming in Luna County, New Mexico. This role involves performing standardized surveys to monitor avian activity, specifically focusing on eagles, within the designated area. The position requires variable hours but is expected to involve 10 days of surveys per month, averaging 11 hours per day. The survey period begins in June 2024 and ends in May 2025.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and competitive within the environmental studies field in the energy industry.

Your Role:

• Perform avian and eagle use surveys adhering to standardized protocols as trained by Tetra Tech staff. This includes identifying local avian species, particularly eagles, by sight and sound, and distinguishing eagle age and species.

• Complete accurate electronic data collection forms using provided equipment, ensuring all observations are meticulously recorded.

• Assist with other biology-related tasks as needed, such as downloading bat acoustic data.

• Follow all personal safety requirements associated with working in rural, isolated areas, including adhering to safety protocols and using appropriate equipment.

Qualifications:

• A Bachelor's degree in Science (Biology, Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, etc.) is preferred but not required.

• Proven ability to identify local avian species, especially eagles, by sight and sound.

• Ability to distinguish between different eagle ages and species.

• Proficiency in using a GPS unit and a tablet for data collection.

• Comfortable working in harsh weather conditions and rugged terrain (e.g., extreme heat, high winds, all forms of precipitation).

• Strong teamwork and independent work skills, with clear communication capabilities.

• A Pre-employment drug screen in compliance with federal regulations is required.

• Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.

Other Requirements:

• Willingness to adhere to safety protocols.

• Flexibility in scheduling due to changing field conditions.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

• Has ability to perform bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 35 lbs. and have a tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrain in a wide range of weather conditions.

• Walking requirements are up to 10 miles in a day.
