Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a R&D Scientist to join our ISP Chemicals business at our Columbus, OH location. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the R&D/Manufactuing function. This position will report to the plant manager.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Operate lab equipment (bench top to kilogram lab scale) to support production requirements, new products and lab trials.

  • Maintaining a safe work environment for self and fellow employees

  • Ensure compliance with applicable law relating to FDA, cGMP, OSHA, EPA, DEA and other Federal, State and local regulatory agencies.

  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and support.

  • Working closely with support organizations to resolve production issues, quality issues, improve efficiency, respond to customer complaints, and support on time deliveries of finished goods.

  • Modeling positive leadership through open and effective communication, motivation, example setting and best practices.

  • Supporting a positive team environment in which members participate, respect, and cooperate with each other to achieve desired results.

  • Develop R&D specs and other data to support projects.

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:


  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, or similar related scientific fields.

  • Minimum 1 – 5 years in the chemical/pharmaceutical industry research and development.

  • Background in synthetic organic chemistry required.

  • Familiarity with production, engineering, safety, quality, and business development.

  • Proven self-starter with urgency to deliver results. Ability to have a hands-on approach.

  • Highly analytical and strategic thinker excited to identify and create opportunities to grow business.

  • Able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Excellent presentation and communication skills.

  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and working collaboratively.

  • Ability to thrive in a multinational and multicultural environment.

  • Experience working within a phase/stage gate development process.

  • Ability to travel up to 10%.

  • Must be authorized to work in the US.

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:


  • An advanced degree, M.S., or Ph.D. in a relevant discipline such as organic chemistry, chemical engineering, or similar related scientific field is preferred

  • Familiarity with FDA cGMP operations & requirements, safety programs, & environmental regulations.

  • Familiarity with SAP or similar ERP system.

  • Familiarity with New Product Introduction (NPI) process

  • Familiarity with plant operations and process scale up activities.

  • Six Sigma, Lean or relevant continuous improvement experience

  • Strong computer skills; Microsoft Office applications & iLIMS or similar Quality database.  

  • Working knowledge of Design of Experiments (DOE)

Physical / Mental Requirements:


  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally.

  • Able to properly wear required PPE which may include hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, or other equipment.

  • Capable of evacuating facility in a safe and timely manner should an emergency arise.

EHS&S Requirements


  • Initial, refresher and ongoing training as required to meet all applicable requirements.

  • Follow proper waste disposal per plant and RCRA requirements.
