School in the Park is an innovative program that shifts the location of “school” from a traditional classroom setting in an inner-city school, to the resources and educational opportunities available at museums in Balboa Park. A relevant instructional environment is created as hands-on learning challenges students to become active participants in their own education. The School in the Park program gives space for students to participate in a program that is designed to fully utilize the unique opportunities of San Diego's cultural institutions in Balboa Park. Rosa Parks Elementary School and Central Elementary School bring third, fourth, and fifth grade students to spend up to eight weeks in Balboa Park, where they participate in weeklong education programs at ten institutions. Wilson Middle School and Clark Middle School sixth graders spend two weeks in Balboa Park, where they participate in weeklong education programs and get to visit 4 different institutions during their two weeks. School in the Park allows students to experience learning in new and highly engaging ways, as academic subjects come to life and hands-on projects create new avenues for success.
