Job Description Summary: The City of Columbia is actively seeking candidates for the position of Community Service Aide in the Police Department. This role involves performing responsible law enforcement assistance work, including monitoring/processing custodial prisoners and providing support in various law enforcement activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Respond to calls for service, investigate accidents and parking violations, and issue parking citations.
Interview victims of minor crimes.
Perform Tele-Serve responsibilities, including having frequent telephone contacts with the public in order to take minor criminal complaints where no suspect information is available and entering internet-based criminal complaints submitted by crime victims.
Respond to traffic control calls; direct traffic as needed.
Provide fingerprint services to walk-ins for employment, travel, adoption, license, etc.
Gather and process paperwork for the Prosecutor’s office and court in-custody arrests.
Process and file hard copies of Municipal Warrants issued by the Judge.
Enter and remove warrants from the MULES system.
Operate police vehicles, radios, and associated equipment.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Possess and maintain MULES certification within 6 months of hire.
Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of various computer programs and basic legal terminology.
Knowledge of local and state laws and ordinances.
Knowledge of basic law enforcement procedures and protocols.
Excellent customer service skills.
Ability to work with little or no supervision in a high-stress environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to collect necessary information from citizens and write reports from limited information.
Ability to work calmly and professionally in dangerous situations.
Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work, concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously, and obtain/maintain required licenses/certifications.
Work Environment:
May be required to work in confined spaces, hazardous traffic conditions, or high/dangerous places.
May be exposed to inclement outdoor weather, wet/humid conditions, vibration, airborne particles/fumes, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, loud noise levels, potentially hazardous bodily fluids, or potentially hazardous or cancer-causing agents/chemicals.
Physical Demands:
Must be able to sit, talk, and listen for extended periods of time.
Must be able to feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, drive, stand, walk, reach with hands/arms, stoop/crouch, climb/balance, and operate mechanical equipment.
Must have clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and ability to identify and distinguish colors.
Must be able to have repetitive wrist, hand, or finger movement to type and work on a computer and/or related equipment.
May be required to lift 100 pounds or more.
Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
Hours/Days: Varies, 12 hour shifts working 80 hours in a 14 day period, days dependent on squad assigned.
Starting Salary: $17.36 per hour
