The VP and Therapy Area Head (TAH) - Science of the Immune system / Specialty is the most senior leadership position for the therapeutic area and will be accountable for providing the vision and strategic leadership to ensure Medical Affairs excellence for his/her therapeutic area within the US. The incumbent will be the US Medical Affairs TA expert on the external HCP environment, emerging therapeutic trends, collection and characterization of external insights. S/he will be accountable for the development of USMA specific, commercially aligned medical affairs strategic plans to help define the value proposition of our medicines, including operationalising regional evidence generation as appropriate for a specific TA, as well as the appropriate external communication of our data to external HCPs. The incumbent will ensure that all medical affairs activities are conducted with the utmost integrity.

Reporting to the SVP of US Medical Affairs, the VP role will be a highly visible leader and s/he will set the strategic goals for a large cross functional team, inclusive of the field organization of MSLs, Health Outcomes Leaders, and potentially multiple medical product teams.

The VP and TAH Affairs will serve as a key strategic partner to colleagues in US commercial, global medical, clinical development and regulatory. The VP will play a key role in establishing the culture within, immune-science as well as the strategy and operational implementation of this strategy. GSK seeks to recruit a leader with the ability to continue to grow within the organization over time. As the Senior TA Physician for the US market, the incumbent is the medical partner to the US  Business Unit Head and the Global Franchise Medical Head, along with colleagues in clinical R&D. S/he will ensure the TA medical voice of customer and market is deeply understood, synthesized across multiple customer segments into medical insights and clearly translated into appropriate actions to enable appropriate use of our medicines for patients in the US. S/he will also ensure that medical insights are communicated on a regular basis to key partners (Global Franchise, Development & Discovery, and Commercial) in a strategic and action oriented way. The opportunity to impact the business is significant.

This VP and TAH will sit on the US Medical Affair’s Leadership team (MALT), as well as represent USMA on both the global franchise medical team and appropriate commercial leadership teams. S/he will be expected to participate in setting the direction for GSK for the therapeutic area with US,, proactively identifying and acting on local market pressures and trends in patient care and treatment. As a key leader in US Medical Affairs, this role will also be expected to contribute to the overall management of USMA, providing input and direction for the overall strategy and management of the organization.  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for Medical Governance and oversight of Medical Affairs Activities for the therapeutic area in the United States. This person is accountable for ensuring Medical Governance excellence through oversight to the TA . Partner with compliance to provide strategic leadership to ensure regulatory compliance for all medical affairs activities. Serve as the Senior Physician for the US for the Therapeutic Area, the medical partner and voice to the US Commercial Business Unit Vice President for the Therapeutic Area; and the voice of the US to the Global Medical Franchise Head and R&D Therapeutic Head.  Also align fully with Safety and Regulatory ensuring compliance with local laws and regulations.  Oversee regional Phase IIIb/IV clinical plans managed in North America for the TA providing a consolidated regional perspective into long-term global clinical and value evidence strategies. Advocate for medical resources/data needed to support successful commercialization of US products Lead the development and execution of globally and commercially aligned medical plans for all medicines and/or vaccines within an assigned therapeutic area(s). S) he is accountable for medical plan development and strategic deployment of all medical resources assigned to that therapeutic area.


  • Drive evidence generation (clinical and value based), synthesis and translation for TA-level, above-molecule or cross-brand plans; engage in collaborative clinical research projects to support US needs (interventional, observational and modeling). 

  • Drive TA health policy and advocacy strategy as agreed upon with global franchise and commercial partners. Ensure that a strategy is in place to facilitate timely publication in respected medical journals or presented at well-recognized congresses.

Lead, oversee and manage TA talent for the US including:  


  • Recruiting, hiring, developing and managing US Medical Affairs Leads (USMALs), Medical Directors, Scientific Affairs Leads, and Clinical Scientists (direct reports) and actively participate and approve all TA talent who indirectly reports to the position (MSLs, USHO and MI)

  • Providing strategic oversight and product direction to the field based Medical teams such as Medical Science and Health Outcomes Liaisons (dotted line reports)

  • Ensure all talent in the TA have the needed medical expertise and maintain a high level of therapeutic and scientific expertise  and achieve the highest level of capability to become industry leaders and deliver the pipeline excellently

  • Deploy medical resources (including MSL, HOL) to achieve the approved strategic plan

Lead the scientific and external engagement strategy for the TA within NAMA (in collaboration with Global Franchise); Review and approve requests to provide proactive education on GSK products or disease states to US HCPs  - determine medical need for education and set educational goals for TA


  • Engage with US health care providers, payers, integrated delivery networks and other customers to obtain medical insights, understand therapeutic and customer trends;

  • Engage in appropriate scientific dialog and debate with external parties;

  • Serve as the US public medical spokesperson on the TA to outside parties to deliver clear medical and scientific data. 

  • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of US market, customers and patient voices, the competitive environment and future healthcare trends.

  • Lead the strategic synthesis, interpretation and translation of US customers/market voice (payers, HCPs, and patients) and regularly deliver medical insights (via a report) and actions to key medical partners (Commercial, Global Franchise, and Development) to inform global and local opportunities, strategies, and solutions for customers.

Enable a performance driven culture with clear metrics and business improvement embedded into the organization and be accountable for metrics to measure and communicate TA Medical Affairs activities to demonstrate the value and achievements. Be recognized as a trusted partner with commercial (all medical partners??) providing medical guidance and input and aligning and supporting promotional engagement strategy.

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • MD or MD/PhD.;   Board Certification or equivalent is preferred

  • Broad experience in science of the immune system is required.

  • Preferred experience in genetics.

  • Commercialization experience with solid knowledge of drug development, safety, regulatory/ market access and reimbursement requirements demonstrating deep understanding of the US market.

  • Significant specialty pharmaceutical and US medical affairs experience

  • Demonstrated effective communication, influence, leadership and talent development

  • Demonstrated consistent strong performer and leader

  • Proven ability to work in a matrix environment

  • Strong organizational, planning, and business acumen skills

  • Proven ability to interpret customer needs as well as negotiation and influence skills
