Job Description:

The newly formed Novel Human Genetics Research Unit (NHG RU) at GSK comprises a multidisciplinary team that utilizes deep scientific knowledge and technical capabilities to identify and validate novel therapeutic targets with genetic association to disease and undertake drug discovery efforts from early stage discovery through to phase 1 clinical trials.

We are seeking to hire a highly motivated scientist to fill a Molecular and Cell Biologist position within the Target Discovery department in the Novel Human Genetics Research Unit in R&D.  The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team to design and execution of genetic studies in disease-relevant cellular model systems for target identification, validation and pathway studies. Specifically, the successful candidate will perform experiments interrogating genes/pathways in physiologically- or disease-relevant cellular models (including iPS-derived cells and primary cells) via genetic or chemical means and will measure the impact via phenotypic assays.  The scientist will have the opportunity to work on targets and pathways relevant to a variety of human diseases and therapeutic areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Play a leading role in the design and implementation of target identification and target validation strategies.

  • Process development to employ or to establish physiological-relevant or disease-relevant cellular models for target discovery.

  • Genetic or chemical interrogation of genes and pathways in relevant cellular models followed by phenotypic assays and data analysis.

  • Work in a matrix team environment to enable delivery of project and department objectives to high scientific standard in a timely manner

  • Comply with all GSK R&D requirements and practices on data integrity, ethics codes, and safety.

Why you?

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • PhD in a life sciences discipline (e.g. Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Immunology, Neuroscience) with 0-4 prior postdoc experience, or MSc with >5 years of experience in the above discipline.

  • Extensive experience in a broad range of molecular & cellular biology techniques especially gene knock-out or knock-down via CRISPR or siRNA/shRNA technologies and gene over-expression technologies.

  • Extensive experience of culturing primary or immortalized cells.

  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent team-working behaviors, interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Highly committed, enthusiastic, self-motivated with a passion for learning.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • Prior experience in CRISPR genome editing technology development and applications, especially in generating mutation or SNP via homology-directed repair.

  • Practical knowledge of cell biology and molecular analysis of cellular functions, with extensive experience in one or more of the following areas:
o    Cellular cloning and molecular characterization at genomic, RNA, and protein levels
o    Culturing/differentiate iPS cells and primary cells and use in biological assays
o    Phenotypic assays including FACS, imaging and single cell analysis technologies

  • Demonstrated knowledge of cell biology and a track record of its applications in target validation and pathway studies
