What part will you play?
  • GAF Energy Solar R&D team is seeking a hands on, dynamic R&D Engineer that will work on the development of next generation building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) technologies that harvest energy from rooftops and deliver customer satisfaction
  • This exciting role will report to the Director, Solar R&D, and work within a cross-functional team to develop technology platforms and solar products that deliver the highest energy production of BIPV roofs at a competitive cost. The ideal candidate must have a passion for thinking out of the box, deliver innovative solar products that will change the world's energy infrastructure, and thrive working in a start-up fast-paced environment.   • TThis person will be responsible for concept, development, and delivery in high-volume manufacturing photovoltaic laminates that transform today's roofs. The role will focus on the prototyping and testing of various concepts for next generation solar roof laminate. This will include testing of various solar cells, cell to cell interconnection, and design of various circuit formation configurations for optimum electrical system performance

What will you be doing?
  • Drive innovation of concepts, prototypes, and tests along with the development and delivery of BIPV laminate for next generation solar rooftops
  • Work with suppliers, collaborators, and supply chain to identify solar cells, interconnection, and circuit formation designs that are needed for our solar solutions
  • Work cross-functionally with other R&D and Roof Integration Engineering teams to generate solar roof solutions that meet or exceed customer expectations
  • Work in an RD Laboratory and perform cycles of learning on various ideas and concepts, test for feasibility of such concepts, analyze laboratory data, and create experimental test reports that can be easily communicated and used to decide next steps in the development cycle
  • Conceptualize new metrology, test methods, and experimental set up, as needed to test new concepts
  • Utilize software design capabilities (electrical, thermal) for increased design cycles of learning to speed up innovation
  • Support purchasing of various laboratory and pilot line tools to enable manufacturing of quality solar products
  • Analyze and communicate effectively any technical problems and status, and make recommendations for next steps in the development cycle

What do we require from you?
  • BS Degree in Physics, Material Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • 3 years of work experience in R&D environment or PhD in a related field with no work experience
  • Minimum 1 years work experience in solar module R&D laboratory environment preferred
  • Demonstrated track record of innovation, challenging problem solving capability, and delivering experiments and results on time
  • General understanding of solar cells physics and photovoltaic module design. BIPV understanding and experience preferred.
  • Understanding of best practices, procedures, and UL/TUV/CEC certification requirements for PV panels and BIPV
  • Hands on laboratory experience with creating and executing various aspects of solar cell and module testing: design verification tests, reliability and validation, flash, and metrology test
  • Able and willing to spend significant time in laboratory and pilot scale environment
  • Strong analytical background, able to analyze experimental data and determine statistical significant trend that guide scientific work (eg. JMP, Matlab). DOE (design of experience) methods for experimental work experience preferred
  • Experience working on cross-functional teams to drive innovation, product development, and a demonstrated record of achievements in such environment
  • Eager to continue to learn and improve technical, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Willing and able to travel domestically and globally up to 15%
