Job Description:

University Benefits is seeking a Senior Accountant responsible for helping to maintain accounting control for the University of Iowa Insurance and Retirement programs.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

Financial Reporting
  • Prepares assigned financial information for unit budget. Prepares accounting reports for sub-units as needed.
  • Provides oversight and completes monthly reconciliations for Benefit accounts (insurance and retirement).
  • Prepares assigned complex monthly financial reports for Benefit financial activity (i.e. Salary/Expense, Insurance (Health/Dental); Cash flow for identified accts., Spending Accts).
Financial Analysis and Planning
  • Perform analysis of insurance and retirement retro-activity.
  • Prepare specialized reports during audit periods or upon request. Financial systems are used on a regular basis.
  • Prepares specialized reports that may involve establishing new processes.
  • Uses extensive knowledge of financial systems in analysis and planning.
Compliance with Policies, Regulations, Laws, and Operational Oversight
  • Knowledge of GAAP accounting standards.
  • Must follow all federal government and IRS rules and regulations when adjusting paychecks.
  • Contribute to recommendations and implementation of new policies/procedures; interpretation of existing policies/procedures.
Transaction Processing
  • Initiates and makes necessary original and correcting journal entries. Initiate, review and approve complex transactions regarding Benefit program accounts.
  • Completes assigned billing functions for benefit programs.
Education Requirement
  • A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience Required
  • 1-3 years of accounting experience
  • Clearly demonstrate a working knowledge of and proficiency with each of the following:
    • General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the ability to apply them appropriately
    • Ability to gather, interpret, and draw accurate conclusions from financial data
    • Ability to create and maintain accurate and thorough financial reports
    • Communication techniques and relationship building skills that enable the ability to communicate with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner
  • Clearly demonstrate extensive knowledge of and proficiency with each of the following:
    • Processing a high volume of information with a high level of accuracy
    • All basic office support software including Microsoft Excel and Word
Desirable Qualifications
  • A working knowledge of and proficiency with:
    • A relational database (e.g. MS Access)
    • Automated financial and accounting systems (e.g. General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivables, E-Deposits, etc.)
  • Extensive knowledge of and the ability to respond to audits to ensure organizational compliance
  • Experience and knowledge with University policy and procedures
