Viasat, Inc. seeks an experienced privacy and compliance attorney for its in-house legal department in Carlsbad, California, to work with Viasat's residential, mobile, commercial and international high-speed satellite internet offerings. The successful candidate will be able to work at all levels of the Company and grow into a leadership position. You will focus primarily on privacy and compliance issues in the context of consumer law, international compliance, lawful intercept and internal adherence to contractual commitments. You will review and advise on new and existing contracts and end-user customer terms, specifically including privacy-related policies and provisions. You'll advise our management on the various legal risks, business strategies, and other issues related to the Company's fast-growing business. You must be diligent and proactive, show excellent business judgment and strategic thinking, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a collegial, fast-paced team environment.
Review and advise on the privacy and compliance aspects of a wide variety of contracts, including complex sales and services agreements, technology infrastructure agreements, distribution and dealer agreements that comply with Company policies and risk tolerance.
Responsible for managing Viasat's lawful intercept program, including corresponding with law enforcement and establishing procedures to comply with lawful intercept obligations.
Provide advice to all levels of the Company in all areas or privacy and compliance, advising on the legal issues and risks, deal structures, negotiation strategy, and company policies and procedures, and using legal concepts that business people can understand.
5+ years' prior experience, preferably in a privacy and compliance in-house practice with a technology business.
Juris Doctorate degree or equivalent with excellent academic credentials.
A solid understanding of compliance frameworks (privacy, NIST, ISO, and PCI), consumer law, and telecommunications law.
Demonstrated experience advising clients in privacy and compliance issues by taking the law and providing practical cost-effective solutions to clients (or business).
Excellent administrative and organizational skills with attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy, together with the ability to manage several simultaneous projects under deadline pressure.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written; must be able to ask clear, concise questions involving complex technology to get requisite answers from business partners and Legal Department colleagues.
Ability to take initiative and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced corporate environment.
Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% of time, primarily to Denver, Colorado. As the Company grows, further travel (including international travel) may be required.
Specific privacy training and/or certification, including CIPP/US and/or CIPP/E.
