DESCRIPTION

The Department of Microbiology & Plant Pathology at the University of California, Riverside invites applicants for an Assistant Specialist to conduct research on gnotobiotic mice. The position will involve basic mouse husbandry with gnotobiotic isolators, including monitoring and replenishment under sterile conditions of food, water, and supplies. In addition to animal husbandry and maintenance, the candidate will support experiments using gnotobiotic animals to probe the relationship between human gut microbes and gastrointestinal pathogens.

Basic qualifications for this position include:
Candidate should be comfortable handling mice, including restraining of animals for collection of fecal pellets, tagging animals for identification, and gavage

Preferred qualifications for this position include:
Experience with gnotobiotic mouse husbandry in flexible-film isolator systems
Experience with positive-pressure mouse cage rack systems
Knowledge of construction of gnotobiotic isolators
Experience with intra-gastric gavage of mice
Experience with anaerobic microbial culture methods.
Experience with DNA extraction, PCR/qPCR, and gel electrophoresis
Prior BSL2 and ABSL2 experience
