Job Overview

The Packaging Engineer is responsible for managing all aspects of packaging design support, including development and validation of packages and packaging systems for medical devices in compliance with applicable FDA and ISO requirements. These duties include developing sterile barrier systems, primary packaging, secondary packaging as well as creating and maintaining detailed specifications and creating and executing validation/qualification protocols. The Packaging Engineer will also influence packaging equipment selection, material selection, supplier selection, and labeling.

Education and Qualification:
  • BS in Packaging Engineering preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience developing and validating packaging systems for sterile medical devices and packaged chemistries
  • Experience developing and executing protocols and reports for packaging validations and equipment qualifications.
  • Ability to lead packaging projects with tight timelines and drive them to successful completion
  • Experience in developing and implementing procedures, methods, and tools for the development and testing of medical device packaging
  • Experience in contributing to technical and cross-functional teams in accomplishing projects with notable impact(s) on company objectives
  • Working knowledge of the U.S. and International standards governing the design, development, testing, and manufacture of medical devices
  • Experience/familiarity with U.S. FDA, GMP, and ISO requirements for the design, validation, manufacturing processes, secondary operations, and assembly of medical device packaging
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to lead meetings and effectively present to a group
  • Proficient PC skills.


  • Serve as the lead technical role in supporting the packaging needs of existing products, including design, development, and testing of packages and packaging systems
  • Establish timelines, budget estimates, and resource requirements for packaging support activities.
  • Plan, organize, and schedule efficiently; effectively manage multiple projects, establish contingencies, deliver on promises, and complete the required documentation
  • Implement test methods and procedures as needed
  • Provide written documentation and reports for testing
  • Investigate design changes and failures, product complaints, and non-conformances; report findings and recommendations in company systems for corrective and preventive action
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining the departmental policies, procedures, and manuals
  • Assist in preparing Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) and risk assessments for products and processes
  • Assist in process validations of new and modified designs and processes
  • Collaborate with Quality to ensure compliance to appropriate ISO/FDA regulations for the design, testing, documentation, and manufacturing of the company's products
  • Interface with Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory, Research & Development, Sales, Marketing, and outside vendors to accomplish assigned tasks
  • Travel as needed (domestic and international), estimated at less than 5%
