Job Purpose & Position Overview:

The Winnebago Indian News (WIN) is a Tribal Council sponsored newspaper. The Tribal Council has adopted the mission statement to “inform and educate the Winnebago tribe of Nebraska of issues that affect them and be a vehicle that stresses positive and beneficial concerns and points of view”. It is the responsibility of the WIN editor to carry out this mission statement through researching and composing articles that accomplish this mission. The editor will schedule, coordinate, and oversee the bi-weekly production of the Winnebago Indian News. The editor must also supervise WIN staff and oversee the daily business operations of the WIN department. The editor must ensure the staff are informed of the events that are occurring on national and local levels that effect the Winnebago Tribe and report the facts relating to those events. The editor must be available to attend tribal and Tribal Council functions and special events. The editor is charged with upholding the integrity of the Winnebago Tribe in fairly and truthfully reporting facts while leaving opinion to the reader. The editor is also charged with ensuring information contained in the WIN is not inflammatory, offensive or incorrect. The editor should consult with the Chief Executive Officer and the Tribal Council regarding changes to the established editorial policy, format, mission statement, and operating procedures. While it is important for the WIN to operate in a business like manner, the mission and the integrity of the WIN should never be compromised in an effort to increase revenue. The editor will work jointly with the WTN Communications Officer, CEO and Tribal Council to secure annual funding and pursue outside funding alternatives that are in the best interest of the entire Tribal organization.

Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities:


  • Demonstrates the Winnebago Tribe’s core mission, vision, and values.

  • Schedule, prepare, edit, and supervise the production of the Winnebago Indian News to meet biweekly publication schedule.

  • Research, compose, and edit news articles that serve to educate and inform the Winnebago membership of issues and concerns that affect them.

  • Report and photograph news items within the community that would be of interest to the Winnebago membership on and off the Winnebago reservation.

  • Report and photograph items that would inform the Winnebago membership of the activities, actions, and objectives of the Winnebago Tribal Council.

  • Work with the WIN office manager to develop and maintain the Winnebago Indian News operating budget and projected revenues for the current fiscal year.

  • Secure yearly funding for the operation of the Winnebago Indian News through: subscriptions, consignment and advertisement sales, computer graphic services, copying services, and the submission of grant application to various funding agencies/organizations.

  • Supervise desktop Publisher, Office Manager, and summer interns.

  • Supervise the business and newspaper operation of the Winnebago Indian News.

  • Maintain established Mission Statement and Editorial Policy.

Required Qualifications/Skills:


  • Must have a bachelor’s degree; preferred in journalism, communication, or English

  • Four years journalism experience preferred.

  • Four years business/program management experience preferred.

  • Must possess experience with: DSLR camera’s, storage devices, 35mm photography equipment, black and white film and paper development, newspaper layout and production, and use of Apple Macintosh computers and programs. Must possess good communication skills; written and orally.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable.

  • Must possess experience in adhering to production schedules and deadlines.

Supervisory Responsibilities:


  • 2-3 People

Training Requirements:


  •  Must be willing to attend meetings and trainings as requested.

Physical Requirements:


  • Normal to light office work which includes the ability to lift up to 10 lbs.

  • Regularly required to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time and use hands to operate computer keyboard, phone, and various office equipment.

  • While performing daily duties, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen.

Mental Requirements:


  • Reading, writing, calculating

  • Above average social interaction skills

  • Reasoning/Analysis

  • Ability to work as part of a team and/or with minimal to no supervision.

Language Requirements:


  • Must possess the ability to read, write, and speak the English language fluently.

  • Must be willing to learn the Winnebago/Ho-Chunk vocabulary and language.

  • Must be able to continually and effectively employ professional verbal and written communications skills.

Certificates, Licenses & registrations:


  • All applicants will comply with 45 CFR 1301, Subpart D, Section 1301.31, C and D, which require all prospective employees to sign a declaration prior to employment regarding all arrests and convictions of child abuse or violent felonies and to comply with PL 101-630 and PL 101-637 regarding criminal records check.
