Job Purpose & Position Overview:
The Winnebago Indian News (WIN) is a Tribal Council sponsored newspaper. The Tribal Council has adopted the mission statement to “inform and educate the Winnebago tribe of Nebraska of issues that affect them and be a vehicle that stresses positive and beneficial concerns and points of view”. It is the responsibility of the WIN editor to carry out this mission statement through researching and composing articles that accomplish this mission. The editor will schedule, coordinate, and oversee the bi-weekly production of the Winnebago Indian News. The editor must also supervise WIN staff and oversee the daily business operations of the WIN department. The editor must ensure the staff are informed of the events that are occurring on national and local levels that effect the Winnebago Tribe and report the facts relating to those events. The editor must be available to attend tribal and Tribal Council functions and special events. The editor is charged with upholding the integrity of the Winnebago Tribe in fairly and truthfully reporting facts while leaving opinion to the reader. The editor is also charged with ensuring information contained in the WIN is not inflammatory, offensive or incorrect. The editor should consult with the Chief Executive Officer and the Tribal Council regarding changes to the established editorial policy, format, mission statement, and operating procedures. While it is important for the WIN to operate in a business like manner, the mission and the integrity of the WIN should never be compromised in an effort to increase revenue. The editor will work jointly with the WTN Communications Officer, CEO and Tribal Council to secure annual funding and pursue outside funding alternatives that are in the best interest of the entire Tribal organization.
