Job Description:

Upward Bound is a federally funded TRIO program which offers fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post secondary education. At OU, Upward Bound is housed within the Division of Student Affairs and collaborates with various service and academic units across campus.

The Assistant Director will be responsible for planning and implementing activities related to the personal, social and academic development of fifty diverse Upward Bound participants. This position coordinates a six-week residential summer academy as well as supervise student residential advising staff. This position provides one-to-one academic mentoring to program participants and maintain federally mandated records for the program.

This position will travel to OKC for school site visits on a regular basis in addition to taking an annual college tour trip with participants.

Required Education: Bachelor Degree or equivalent combination of education/job related experience, AND:

  • 12-24 months experience with Federal TRIO programs, academic support programs or similar programs


  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information

  • Able to communicate well and build rapport quickly with students, faculty and staff

  • Able to produce reports and complete work within deadlines

  • Strong initiative to solve problems

  • Able to work well with interdepartmental teams and initiatives

  • Ability to accurately read and understand written materials and instructions

  • Basic computer skills

  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines

  • General office skills such as multi-line phone, copying, filing, faxing, and mail

  • Able to create and deliver effective training presentations

  • Composition and proofreading skills

Advertised Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to engage in repetitive motions; grasp objects with fingers or hands, communicate, including with others; see, including color, depth perception and clarity. Requires some periods of sitting. Able to lift up to 25lbs. Able to walk for long periods of time in varying temperatures. Able to drive large and small passenger vehicles.

Departmental Preferences:

  • Master's Degree

  • 12-24 months working with high school students

  • Bilingual or some level of proficient Spanish speaking

Supervision: Supervision of temporary and student employees during six-week residential summer academy
