Dr. Bergan's laboratory, in the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University, is seeking a highly motivated research assistant who has a strong interest in the field of cancer biology.
*Note: this is a limited duration position for several months to cover a leave of absence in the lab. May be converted to permanent employment if the need arises.
This individual will primarily work on a project seeking to define the underlying mechanism(s) that regulate the process of prostate cancer metastasis, information that will be utilized to develop novel therapeutic approaches.
Under the supervision and guidance of the senior research staff, responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Maintaining a high level of professional expertise in the field;
Designing and or executing experiments;
Establishing laboratory procedures and systems that enforce and maintain a high level of organization in the lab.
This position will be hired at either the Research Assistant 2 or Senior Research Assistant level, depending on years of experience. See Qualifications.
Function/Duties of Position
Mammalian cell culture
Molecular biology assays
Utilization of in-vivo models and associated techniques
Cell isolation and DNA/RNA purification from bacterial cultures
In-vivo models and patient samples
Operating a variety of instruments and scientific equipment, including quality control and maintenance
Ordering chemicals, reagents, and other laboratory supplies
Collect, record, organize and verify the accuracy of data
Keep detailed and accurate laboratory records.
Tabulate data, perform calculations, prepare charts, graphs and reports.
May use software applications to assemble, manipulate, format and/or perform statistical analysis of data
May assist with preparation of figures, tables and reports for publications and grants and perform preliminary interpretation of results to determine whether they are consistent with experimental goals
Participate in scientific writing by preparing research findings for presentation at scientific meetings and conference and manuscripts for publication
Bachelor's and no experience (Research Assistant 2) -or- Bachelor's and at least 1 year of experience (Sr. Research Assistant)
Proficiency with computers specifically MS Office (which includes, Excel, Access, Word and PowerPoint) and statistical analysis software
Experience handling chemical and biologically hazardous materials
Knowledge of policy and regulations applicable to the laboratory, including but not limited to safety, animal and radiation
Technical proficiency, scientific creativity collaborative ability, and independent thinker
Proven ability to work collaboratively with a high performing work group
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time
Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills: both written and verbal
Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems
Demonstrated ability to learn new and innovative processed quickly
Energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships
Ability to operate complex scientific equipment and develop and troubleshoot complex experimental protocols
Degree in biological science major or a related field of study
2 or more years of related laboratory experience
Experience in molecular biology, cancer biology or a related field
Experience with in-vivo and in-vitro models of prostate cancer, drug discovery, preclinical testing of novel therapeutics, cancer biomarkers, and statistics
