Job Description
The Applied Research group in the Consumer Electronics Division has an exciting opportunity for an experienced digital signal processing (DSP) engineer.  As a member of the technology innovation engine known as Bose Labs, you will work in a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary team environment.  You will research and develop advanced DSP solutions that enable a broad spectrum of product features.  You will contribute expertise to:

  • Exploring new technologies to be incorporated into wearable wireless audio products such as ear buds, headphones, glasses, and other wearable form factors, as well as out-loud products such as WiFi or Bluetooth connected speakers, soundbars, and premium home theater systems.

  • Researching new audio algorithms that improve sound quality and acoustic experiences, and speech algorithms that enhance voice capture for virtual personal assistants (VPA) and communication.  Often collaborating closely with acoustic, mechanical, and electrical engineers.

  • Researching and developing algorithms that fuse various sensor signals to infer product state and user context to anticipate or enable automatic features.  Often collaborating closely with software engineers.

  • Pioneering systems that enable audio augmented reality experiences which leverage position and orientation information and 3D audio projection.

  • Prototyping technology and product concepts.

  • Validating signal processing algorithms and product performance through critical listening and simulations as well as electrical and acoustical measurements.

  • Being an advocate and guardian of sound quality.

  • Informing system architecture.

Required Skills

  • Methodical approach to solving complex technical problems.

  • Solid understanding of signal processing concepts:  Discrete signals, sampling theory, z-transforms, Fourier transforms, FIR / IIR filter design, adaptive systems, beam forming / array design.

  • Ability to design and analyze time and frequency domain implementations (and understand the tradeoffs).

  • Significant experience developing DSP algorithms in Matlab and other rapid prototyping environments.

  • Proficiency with advanced electrical engineering concepts.

  • At least 3 years experience in DSP research and / or development. More important is a strong ability to identify and solve challenging technical problems.

  • Excellent written and verbal skills; capable of reading and writing detailed technical documents.

Beneficial Skills (not required but advantageous)

  • Experience with machine learning and deep neural networks, and developing inference models for embedded hardware.

  • Experience with Inertial Measurement Units (IMU), IR sensors, proximity and other sensors.

  • Experience with lab and field data collection and prototype testing.

  • Knowledge of physical acoustics, room acoustics, loudspeakers, drivers, and microphones.

  • Familiarity with psychoacoustic concepts.

  • Critical listening skills, experience with formal listening experiments.

  • Familiarity with automatic speech recognition (ASR), and video recognition.

  • Embedded software development in C.

  • Understanding of fixed-point DSP challenges (quantization, limit-cycles, error spectrum shaping)

  • Experience with embedded DSP hardware (ADI, Qualcomm / CSR, and ARM)

  • Passion for sound quality


  • Masters or PhD degree in related technical discipline (e.g. EE, Physics, Math, Computer Science).
