Job Description:

PPG is currently hiring for a seasoned leader to join our Automotive OEM coatings team as the Operations Engineer at our Cleveland Plant. The Operations Engineer in the Cleveland facility is responsible for providing engineering support to production processes within the plant. This responsibility takes on many forms and requires interaction with a multitude of different departments including technical, maintenance, planning, QA, RM procurement, and IT. The position requires some interaction with the operators and supervisors in each building to help define, initiate, and implement projects that improve the overall process from a safety, ergonomic, quality, and/or productivity standpoint. The current focus of this position will be the improvement of our process control utilization and data reporting systems. Leveraging data has become an integral part of most modern businesses. It is our desire to implement processes that can collect data and then leverage it to automatically aid in the production process. This position will play a key role in the development and justifications of these projects. Specific activities performed by the perspective candidate include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Support Departmental EHS Initiatives (CORITY, PSM, Audits, etc.)

  • Perform Process Optimization/Cycle Time Improvements

    • Develop and Maintain Auto-Adjust System

    • Optimize Process Parameters

    • Implement Process Changes/Projects

  • Participate in and Support Department Related Kaizen Events

  • Gather Data and Assemble Cost Justification for Process Related Projects

  • Evaluate and Find Ways to Improve Equipment Utilization

  • Troubleshoot Automated Equipment/Process Issues - will likely involve some evening or weekend phone support

    • Coordinate and Implement Fixes for Both Acute and Chronic Control Issues

  • Introduce New Technologies or Processes into the Department

  • Improve Root Cause Investigation Process

  • Formula Maintenance of more automated processes

    • Development of Process Templates

    • Instructional Changes

    • Operator/Technical/QA Change Requests

    • Dispense System Updates

Education & Experience Necessary

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Chemical Engineering.

  • This position requires a broad and deep understanding of engineering systems and chemical processes along with 10 or more years' experience in various positions, with focus on manufacturing processes, batch paint processing experience preferred.

Functional/Technical Expertise Necessary

  • Candidate must demonstrate a high degree of attention to detail and managing complexity.

  • Knowledge of process control systems and data acquisition processes.

  • Experience in initiating investigations and implementing corrective actions.

  • Excellent multi-tasking skills with ability to be self-motivated and self-directed.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to interact with multiple levels of the organization from shop floor to upper management.

  • Knowledge of industry regulatory requirements, including EH&S requirements/responsibilities such as PSM a plus.

  • Lean/6 sigma and Toyota manufacturing principles experience a plus.
