Ohio Department of Public Safety - Ohio State Highway Patrol

 

Report in Location: 401 West US Route 36, Piqua, OH 45356

 

Work Hours:  6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.  Working days and hours may vary

 

 

Under direction of Motor Carrier Enforcement Supervisor, enforces commercial motor vehicle laws by independently conducting roadside inspections of commercial motor vehicles & drivers to ensure compliance with federal & state safety regulations (e.g., travels in state-issued vehicle within designated area or to specific location {e.g. weigh station, rest area, & road side} to conduct inspections of commercial motor vehicles; climbs into trucks & trailers to check for proper cargo securement & presence of hazardous materials; bends, stoops & utilizes mechanics’ “creeper” in order to crawl under vehicle to visually check vehicle mechanical components {e.g., brakes, shoes, linings, drums, hoses, air reserve tanks & measurements, vehicle suspension, springs, steering {e.g., drag links, tie rods; frame cracks}; inspects company markings & safety equipment {e.g., lights, fire extinguisher, reflective triangles}, vehicle equipment, load securement, driver’s operator’s license, medical certificate & log book & hours of service records); Documents & reports economic violations with Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO); Investigates assigned complaints regarding violation of PUCO rules & regulations; Utilizes portable laptop & other computer equipment (e.g.,  research motor carrier operating authority, registration, insurance & record inspection data; electronically transfers inspection data to PUCO); Makes on-site recommendation to correct violations; Provides assistance where possible; Maintains effective public relations with drivers, company representatives, law enforcement officers & others to ensure compliance (e.g., checks compliance with hazardous material regulations, refers to PUCO & federal rules & regulations, policies & procedures, federal hazardous material regulations, out-of-service criteria & other reference sources) with  state & federal safety regulations (e.g., Ohio Administrative Code Ch. 4901-PUCO, the Ohio Revised Code 5503.31, Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49, Parts 100-180, 383, 387, 390-397).

 

Prepares reports reflecting inspection of vehicles & drivers (e.g., vehicle inspection, daily activity, maintains division policy & related reference materials); Provides field training & coaching to new inspectors; Assists other inspectors, troopers & local law enforcement (e.g., assist with traffic control, hazardous material incidents, provides guidance on commercial vehicle enforcement); Prepares & delivers presentations &/or training related to highway safety & compliance with state & federal rules (e.g., inspection procedures, cargo securement, human trafficking, etc.); Ensures vehicles & drivers were placed out-of-service & proper corrections were made; Testifies in court in regards to violations; Assists general public on roadways (e.g., driving directions, change flat tires, calls in assistance for drivers-in-distress); Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

VALID DRIVER LICENSE REQUIRED.

6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in motor carrier inspection or commercial vehicle maintenance; 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in public relations; valid driver’s license.

 

-Or 6 mos. exp. in enforcing commercial motor vehicle laws or regulations; 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in public relations; valid driver’s license.

 

-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
