Job Description:

Under the direction of the Highway Maintenance Supervisor, the Highway Maintenance Technician is responsible for operating a wide variety of highway maintenance equipment used in maintaining County roads and bridges. Performs routine preventive maintenance and safety checks on assigned pieces of equipment; assists maintaining highway buildings; assisting in other maintenance duties, as delegated, and the removal of snow and ice from assigned routes.
Duties include, but are not limited to:

Operates a wide variety of maintenance equipment in the maintenance and repair of County roads and ditches.
a) Plows, wings, scrapes and removes snow and ice from assigned routes and roadways. Applies salt and sand to roads, as needed, and in accordance with department procedures and guidelines.
b) Operates backhoes, front-end loaders, motor graders, skid-steer loaders, dozers, snowplow equipment, tractors, mowers, and other equipment in performing job assignments.
c) Maintains asphalt, concrete and gravel roads.
d) Loads, hauls, and/or lays down construction materials to construction/maintenance projects.
e) Installs, replaces and/or repairs concrete and metal culverts.
f) Repairs frost boils, washouts, and patching holes. Performs crack filling, dura patching, mill and fill pothole patching, seal coating, and adding and spreading materials to gravel roads.
· Clears brush, vegetation and trees from right-of-ways to maintain proper road visibility. Mows grass along right-of-ways.
· Performs safety checks before, during & after the operation of equipment. Completes pre-trip and post trip inspection reports.
· Performs general and routine maintenance on equipment (e.g. changes oil, replaces fluids, etc.) and may assist the mechanic in various repairs or service activities, as directed.
· Sets up and tears down safety barricades. Sets up work zones and performs flagging duties in accordance with department safety procedures. Sets up Detour signs and routes as directed by the Highway Supervisor.
· Maintains all required logs, time sheets, and record keeping requirements required by the department.
· Reports any hazards, poor road conditions or maintenance needed to Highway Maintenance Supervisor.
· Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required.
