Job Description Summary:

The Principal Chemist will lead highly complex material development projects for automotive applications and provide technical support, guidance, and solutions to upper management. They will coordinate with program management, product development, process engineering, and quality management to achieve strategic technical goals and predict customer demands. They will identify development projects, project requirements, establishing teams, and executing project goals. Job Description:


  • Develops methodology for advanced analyses, tests, and validation requirements for new or updated formulas

  • Manages new materials and revisions to be entered into the appropriate product management system

  • Applies expertise of business group operations and application methods to drive implementation of project objectives, product systems, budgets, timelines, and other requirements

  • Identifies and approves materials technologies to be developed for future use of Engineering and Operations

  • Acts as a technical mentor to the department

  • Create innovative technologies that mitigates risk on current and future products

  • Communicates complex concepts in a manner that is understood by plants, research technicians, quality control, customers and other internal and external parties regarding development, applications, quality assurance, and related programs and services

  • Acts as a technical specialist in their respective fields representing the Company and customer interactions

  • Acts as a primary point of contact and liaison for critical technical issues as defined by Senior Management

  • Approves and develops reports and documents detailing project processes, results, conclusions, and analysis of failed current production materials; recommends additional actions or research


  • Develops and applies department policies, procedures, applicable rules, and regulations; ensures compliance with these areas

  • Develops the benchmarking strategy for competitive technologies

  • Approves the development of materials best practices and generation of materials specifications

  • Leads projects with notable risk and complexity; develops the strategy for project execution

  • Identifies specialized equipment for future technology development using professional judgment and background

  • Impacts the direction and resource allocation for program, project or services; works within general functional policies and industry guidelines

  • Leads and champions project teams to achieve milestones and objectives

  • Identifies and champions various scrap, lean, and variation reduction projects

  • Reviews new materials and technological developments with raw material supplier management

  • Contributes to the latest developments within the industry and professional field by meeting with people of similar capacities, reading industry and technical literature and attending industry trade group meetings

  • May, on occasion, be required to perform duties other than those specified in this description

Education and Qualifications:


  • Advanced degree in Polymer Science & Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy or Metallurgical Engineering preferred

  • Typically has twelve plus years of experience

  • Technical experience in manufacturing environment required

  • Excellent chemistry, mathematical skills, and mechanical aptitude required

  • Solves unique and complex problems with broad impact on the business; requires conceptual and innovative thinking to develop solutions

  • Excellent conflict management skills

  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office and ISO/TS 16949 standards

  • Ability to explain advanced professional chemistry principles and practices

  • Clearly and concisely communicates written and verbal messages

  • Willingness and ability to travel to customer locations, as necessary
