Job Description:

Eligibility :

Must be concurrently enrolled and returning to an academicprogram in the fall in an accredited degree-seeking program.

Primary Function of Position:

The VisionSystems Mechanical Engineer Intern will provide engineering for the complexvision systems for Intuitive Surgical's endoscopes and vision processingsystems, and complete the development, documentation, and verification of theseimprovements. The successful candidatewill assist in resolving complex mechanical, materials and manufacturing designissues including failure analysis of products that have been in the field aswell as work with field data to determine root causes. Astrong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward is required as well asa commitment to high product quality.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Work in cross-functional project teams to design, develop and verify modifications to the endoscope and associated vision processing systems


• Investigate and determine root cause of both latent and emerging design, manufacturing or material defects


• Work with Failure Analysis teams to determine failures in the field


• Develop analytical static and dynamic models to assess stress, thermal, fatigue, and modal performance.


• Provide mechanical engineering support for resolution of field and manufacturing issues


• Design and conduct experiments to understand product performance


• Assemble test fixtures to be used as part of the failure analysis process.

Skills, Experience,Education, & Training:

• Experience with mechanical design and analysis a plus


• Comfortable in a laboratory conducting experiments


• Good report writing and presentation skills


• Familiarity using engineering tools such as Matlab and SolidWorks


• Hands-on engineer with the proven ability to work well in a team environment


• Comfortable with setting up experiments, selecting, and using measurement and test equipment


• A real excitement to learn and get to the bottom of tough technical problems

Learning Outcomes:

• Troubleshooting engineering failure modes of complexoptical, mechanical, and electrical systems


• Learning cross functional skills of working with mechanical,optical, and electrical engineers


• Familiarity of Intuitive's vision systems products


• Exposure to customer interaction


• Exposure to supplier interaction

Commitment: Must beavailable to work full-time hours, M-F for 10-12 weeks beginning Summer of 2021.
