Department Description

Campus Recreation is a department within the division of Student Affairs that provides fitness, wellness and recreation to the campus community. The UCD Equestrian Center is a program of Campus Recreation and operates a year-round program in English and Western Riding Lessons and Horse Boarding Programs.

JOB SUMMARY
Teach group and private lessons in hunter/ jumper and Western riding styles at beginner through advanced levels. Advanced hunter/ jumper levels include small jumps. Teach appropriate safety and behavior topics as related to horses to students. Teach proper care (including grooming, tacking up and untacking) as needed to lesson students. Ride beginner through advanced level horses as needed to improve behavior for less advanced riders. Draw on in depth knowledge of the equine industry and equine husbandry to implement best practices in riding program.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Respond to and access horses covering a 25-acre facility.

Bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces.

Handle excited and/ or difficult horses during difficult circumstances.

Work in dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.

Stand for several hours at a time while teaching lessons.

Work outdoors in all weather, including hot, dry, dusty, windy, cold, rainy, and/ or muddy conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This is a 10% limited position. Regular work schedule TBD.

Work some weekends and holidays; work schedule subject to change without prior notification.

Position is a mandatory reporter for known or suspected child abuse and requires that a statement acknowledging the requirement to report child abuse be signed.

Subject to medical surveillance procedures and review in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations and university policy.

Work performed in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
Must be able to tolerate foul odors, sights, and substances.

Work with animal dander and hay.

Work in an area with potentially dangerous large animals.

Position may at times require the individual to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/ or infectious disease are present. Specific hazards include but are not limited to: zoonoses, chemicals, pesticides, fuels, and solvents.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Minimum of 3-5 years teaching experience for group riding lessons at beginner through advanced levels.

First Aid/ CPR/ AED certification.

Experience in safe horse handling skills and techniques. Knowledge of horse and rider safety equipment, tack, and supplies.

Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and program participants in a customer service environment, and project a positive image of the department and its goals.

In-depth knowledge of horse behavior and keen observation skills to recognize signs of illness or injury.

Ability to utilize various teaching styles to communicate well with visual, auditory, verbal, and kinesthetic learners.

Skill to handle groups of horses and riders in a safe and organized manner. Insight and knowledge to appropriately partner horses and riders.

Skill to ride and school many types of horses including advanced and spirited horses.

Ability to maintain accurate and legible records.

Strong oral and written communication skills to share information with and communicate diplomatically and professionally with a wide variety of people in a hectic environment.

Ability to meet all training requirements by university, department, and unit.

Preferred:

Knowledge of basic horse husbandry standards and care.

Knowledge of classical riding principles and methods.

Certification by Certified Horsemanship Association, Pony Club, USHJA, or other equestrian industry program.

Show experience at USEF rated competitions.
