Job Description:

Job Summary:



Providestechnical expertise within the sterile environment, in assisting/supporting themembers of the Surgical Team, to provide quality patient care. Further demonstrates a good technicalknowledge of the surgical environment and utilizes this knowledge in assistingthe Registered Nurse to provide surgical environment which supports qualitypatient care. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse performs a variety ofduties related to the care and treatment of patients.



Principal Duties and Responsibilities





  • Maintains asterile environment as prescribed by Hospital policy and AORN Standards of Careand adheres to blood/body fluid policies and procedures utilizing OSHAStandards.




  • Functions underall aspects of surgical techniques, both routine and special surgicalprocedures and applies them in a professional manner.




  • Functions underthe direction of the Surgeon and the Registered Nurse to meet all aspects ofpatient care and safety




  • Ensures properinstrumentation equipment in accordance with department protocol and surgeon'spreference cards.




  • Provides a safeand efficient environment for the patient.




  • Respectspatients' inherent rights to privacy, dignity and safety.




  • Differentiatessterilization methods for special equipment and instruments necessary forspecific surgical procedures.




  • Prepares andunderstands the specific use of all supplies and equipment used for surgicalprocedures.




  • Assumesresponsibility for orientation of new Operating Room employees, as required.




  • Assists in thepreparation/labeling of medications on the sterile field during the "surgicalprocedure", under the direction of the Surgeon and Registered Nurse, accordingto Pharmacy and Standards of care.




  • Understands theimportance of teamwork, consideration and cooperation. Understands the need tobe actively involved in universal Protocol and "Hard Time Out"




  • Understands thefunction of a "first assist".




  • Understands andassists with patient positioning devices/equipment, ensures proper patientspositioning safety.




  • Works inconjunction with the Registered Nurse and CSR Tech. to update and maintainequipment and instrumentation of specialty services.




  • Participates inunit staff meetings, in-service programs and educational programs relative tocareer development. Performs other work-relatedduties and activities as assigned or requested by his/her immediate supervisor.




  • Assists patientswith ADL's.




  • Demonstratesproficiency with the taking of vital signs, treatments, procedures, andequipment as demonstrated bythe skills checklist.




  • Weighs, lifts-moves,positions and transports patients as appropriate.




  • Reports/documentsinterventions and the patient's response to the appropriate nurse.




  • Communicateschanges in patient condition in a timely manner.




  • Promptly answerspatient lights/responds to alarms




  • Maintainsadequate stock of supplies in each patient room.




  • Maintains parlevels of the clean supply and medication rooms, re-orders items as needed,keeps an accurate list ofsupplies, re-stocks shelves and maintains a clean environment. As assignedmonitors inventories and replaces materials as needed




  • Demonstrates theability to recognize and deal with emergencies.




  • Completesidentification and allergy bracelets on patients as needed.




  • Assists in chartform completion/ adds forms to all records as needed (i.e. doctor's orders,progress notes).




  • Exchanges needleboxes, replaces gloves in all areas and participates in maintaining a clean,clutter-free environment.




  • Assists inarrangements for patient transports at the request of the nurse in charge.




  • Demonstratescompetency in the following areas by physical demonstration or writtenexam: Equipment, Age Specific V/SAssessment, Blood Glucose monitoring, EKG procedure, venipuncture, urinetesting, and handling of other specimens that may be required.




  • Reviews, attends,and signs all in-service updates.




  • Activelyparticipates in own performance appraisal.




  • In the EmergencyDepartment gathers patient data relative to presenting complaint, vital signs,past medical history, allergies, tetanus status, etc.




  • Performs scheduledand as needed cleaning of medical equipment.




  • May be requiredto float to other areas as a PCT.







Qualifications

Essential Knowledge,Skills, and Abilities Required for the Position



Knowledgeof:




  • Knowledge of current standards of practice required.





  • Maintains skill level, competency andcertification on an ongoing basis.



    Skills:





  • Must be able to demonstrate adequate technical skillsand judgment to function unsupervised during on-call, second shift, and weekendhours.


  • Must be able to function in CSR to coverneeds. Ensures proper preparation of instruments and equipment.



    Ability to:





  • Ability to tactfully communicate with both internaland external customers.


  • Ability to handle stress and work in emergencysituations.


  • Ability to assist patients on and off equipment.


  • Ability to move quickly in the event of an emergency.


  • Ability to stand and walk approximately ninety percent(90%) of shift, with frequent climbing,


    bending, reaching, stooping, squatting, and helping tolift objects and/or patients ranging from five


    (5) tothree hundred (300) or more pounds.


  • Ability to use of fingers and hands to operate alldepartment-related equipment as described on the Department checklist. Additionally, must use telephone, calculator,fax, and other related office equipment.


  • Utilize face shields/mask, gloves, protectiveclothing, safety glasses, and other protection associated with the care ofpatients.



    Credentials and Experience Required



    • Graduateof an Accredited Civilian or Military Operating Room Technician Program.


    • Threeyears of related experience.


    • CertifiedOperating Room Technician


    • EMTor equivalent preferred



      Special Requirements



  • Available to work day, evening and/or night shift aswell as rotation on weekends as assigned. Able to rotate to units as assigned.


  • Able to fill call expectations


  • Willing to work additional shifts as assigned.


  • Available to stay overnight should need arise duringpatient transports off island.


  • May be exposed to the following hazards: temperature fluctuations, moderate noise levels, minimaldust, infectious diseases and other chemicals as customarily used in a hospitalsetting. Exposure to various hazards inhandling patient transports.


  • Available to work overtime as needed tocomplete all job duties.


  • Mustbe available to work in the case of a Hospital declared emergency.
