About this Opportunity

As a Compliance Attorney, you'll support the Senior Vice President, Global Compliance & Employee Relations and the broader Legal, Compliance, and Employee Relations team in managing a broad range of legal matters. You will conduct internal investigations and assist with the implementation and management of the compliance program, including drafting and implementing policies, controls, and related trainings, as well as conducting risk assessments.

  • Advise on strategy development and execution in support of the creation, enhancement, and implementation of policies, procedures, controls, and systems for Herman Miller's compliance program.

  • Oversee the design, implementation, review, internal and external audits, and updates of company compliance policies and programs at the direction of the SVP Global Compliance & Employee Relations.

  • Actively manage outside counsel as needed, including providing assistance with budgeting, reviewinginvoices, and actively engagingin the financial impact of matter management.

  • Coordinate with Global Compliance and Employee Relations team and broader organization on the development and maintenance of the global compliance program and assist with implementation at the local level (North America, Europe, Asia Pacific/Middle East/Australia, Latin America), specifically as it relates to anti-corruption and other high risk compliance areas as outlined in the Corporate Code of Conduct.

  • Work with cross-functional teams within the organization and compliance policy owners to monitor and test key risk areas and compliance program effectiveness.

  • Actively monitor and analyze developments related to compliance, including trends, emerging laws or regulatory guidance, industry best practices, and other compliance-related matters and incorporateany external best practices and applicable compliance guidelines (e.g., Department of Justice, Federal Sentencing Guidelines, etc.) into Herman Miller's business practices.

  • Manage and conduct internal investigations as assigned, as well as developand presentinvestigative findings, recommended remediation, and summary documentation.

  • Prepare reports on compliance initiatives, trends, emerging laws or regulatory guidance, industry best practices, and case management.

  • Support Herman Miller's third-party due diligence program.

  • Assist with the development of the annual compliance plan.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.

You might be just who we're looking for if you have . . .


  • A Juris Doctor degree.

  • License and memberin good standing admitted to practice law or in at least one US state or similar international jurisdiction.

  • Strong academics and a minimum of three years post graduate compliance-related work experience as an attorney in an in-house legal department, government agency, or well-regarded law firm in a related practice area or areas. Global experience and experience with retial or manufacturing sectors is highly preferred.

  • Significant experience conducting and/or participating in investigations.

  • Considerable experience implementing and/or managing compliance programs with a solid understanding of risk assessment and third-party due diligence.

  • Sound legal judgment combined with strong business acumen.

  • The ability to work in a team environment with a high level of integrity and professionalism.

  • An understanding of cultural differences across geographic regions with the ability to effectively engage and connect with virtual team members and stakeholders.

  • The ability to advise and partner with individuals at all levels of the organization and work within a matrixed environment.

  • Detail-orientationwith the ability to quickly comprehend and provide practical interpretation of complex USand International laws and regulations.

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills with an ability to influence others.

  • Strong interpersonal, consultative, and problem-solving skills.

  • The ability to travel, including internationally, as needed.

  • The ability to gain and apply in depth knowledge of Herman Miller's business practices, operational procedures, organization, and culture to assigned legal and compliance matters.

  • The ability to perform all essential job functions of the position with or without accommodations.
