WANTED: A mission-driven professional with an Active Secret clearance to become our INSURV Readiness Assist Team (IRAT) Engineering Main Propulsion Trainer working in San Diego, CA.

A week in the life of a Main Propulsion Trainer:


  • Provide primarily main propulsion equipment focused material assessment support and crew training to U.S. Navy ships, located in both CONUS and OCONUS, preparing for INSURV Material Inspections or in execution of Mid-Cycle Inspections (MCI)as a representative of SEA21/PMS443.

  • Work closely with the Type Commander Material Inspection Team (TMIT) and be expected to provide support in propulsion engineering related systems.

  • Lead main propulsion engineering functional area in Readiness Events (RE-5/6/7) delineated in the Surface Force Readiness and Training Manual. Familiarization with the INSURV Inspection Guides (IIG) is desired.

  • Provide training and material assessments on propulsion related equipment and systems to include Main Engines (experience with both Gas Turbine and Diesel plants is favored), Main Reduction Gears (MRG), drive train from power source to propeller, lube and fuel oil service and transfer, Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP), bleed air, engine controls, console ground and back-up power supply as well as working knowledge of associated engineering administrative programs governed by NSTMs.

  • Observe and evaluate full power demonstrations IAW EOSS CP NR MUFP using INSURV guidance on execution.

  • Assist in developing class equipment trends and commonalities from INSURV and MCI inspection results and provide recommendations for improvements that can be implemented in acquisition and/or availability planning.

  • Work directly with ships force in planning and prioritizing maintenance actions, which will lead to material improvement. He will conduct shipboard surveys, prioritize repairs and train ships force in support of INSURV preparation.

  • Provide written assessments of material condition, crew knowledge, and Communication/Info Systems readiness, in support of INSURV preparation progress to the ship, SEA 21, and the individual ships chain of command, as required.

  • Draft and submit technical feed back reports (TFBR) and PMS FBRs as necessary to contribute to current fleet readiness.

  • Make recommendations for providing additional SEA21/443 assistance if needed and participate in post-INSURV Hotwash events to capture Lessons Learned and process issues in order to improve combat readiness.

Job Requirements




  • 20 years experience with shipboard Main Propulsion engineering systems

  • Highly skilled, experienced former U.S. Naval Officers or senior Naval enlisted (CPO/SCPO/MCPO) with tours as INSURV inspectors

  • SIC/TYCOM Staff, or Afloat Training Group members are encouraged to apply

  • Relevant experience in new construction ships, Combatant/Amphibious ships Engineer Officer, Main Propulsion Assistant and membership in ships Engineering Training Team are all highly desired attributes

  • Experience on a variety of propulsion ships (GT, DSL, STM) will be highly favored.
