Job Description:

Federal Signal has an immediate opening for a Human Resources Generalist at our University Park, Illinois facility. This position will manage the execution of human resource policies, programs and initiatives for the Safety & Security Systems Group. Responsible for all aspects of the associate’s experience: recruitment and selection, coaching and mentoring, rewards and recognition, management of the performance appraisal process, succession planning, associate development/training and change management.


Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities



  • Responsible for HR Generalist activities for 450 person two shift manufacturing and office environment facility including: recruitment & selection, onboarding, associate relations, coaching, performance management & corrective action, teambuilding, leadership & organizational development, change management, training, exit interviews, etc.

  • Provides day to day tactical HR support for employee base.

  • Initiates partnerships with business and management leaders to identify opportunities to improve business results.

  • Facilitates talent & succession planning, career pathing, job evaluations, promotion recommendations, merit planning cycles, salary surveys and other project management activities.

  • Suggest action plans to retain key associates and create a positive and productive work environment and culture with a focus on talent management & retention. 

  • Manage performance review process for salary/hourly employees, including calibration meetings and assessing the reviews.

  • Together with the HR team, shares responsibility for recruitment, selection and onboarding of talent for all levels of the organization.

  • Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of industry and HR trends, standards and “best practices”.  Stays abreast of applicable human resources regulations and trends; utilizes this knowledge in day-to-day activities.

  • Implements new human resource programs and initiatives across the business.

  • Assists in management of community relations activities with local school districts, colleges and universities to strengthen Federal Signal's presence and contributions to the community through internship and career expo participation.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements



  • Bachelor's degree required, PHR or SPHR preferred.

  • Minimum 3-5 years experience in Human Resources functions required.

  • 3+ years experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Experience in Performance Management and hourly/salary position recruitment required.

  • Demonstrated expertise in active listening, coaching and associate relations.

  • Ability to take on great capacity, prioritize, focus and independently execute in a high quality manner.

  • Capable of building strong and respected business partnerships and trust at all levels in our business.

  • Highly effective in influencing and negotiations with a mindset for a swift & positive “solve for" resolution.

  • Applies situational leadership to appropriate stakeholders and business conditions.

  • Capable of taking concepts/projects and creating processes, frameworks, templates, and presentations.

  • Proven ability to work in fast paced, high growth environment.

  • Strong customer service focus and follow-through skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proficient with MS Office suite software including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.
