Job Description


The Assistant Project Manager (APM) position has been created to facilitate the opportunity for staff engineers to gain exposure to and training in executing project management responsibilities. The APM has learned how to successfully produce and assemble a complete project and has gained experience with multiple types of projects. Has shown ability to obtain assistance from design and project engineers by assigning tasks to Design Engineers and project engineers, monitor their progress and assume responsibility for the accuracy and completeness of their work. Takes initiative in coordinating the project with others inside and outside of the project team.

The Assistant Project Manager will be assigned specific responsibilities (as listed on the Project Manager's position description) for specific projects. As the Assistant Project Manager's skill level increases, the responsibilities will be increased proportionally. By allowing the Project Manager to delegate certain responsibilities, this position allows the Assistant Project Manager to effectively manage more projects.


    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



    • Sound knowledge of structural engineering fundamentals

    • Able to use Revit to navigate a model and review and coordinate with other disciplines.

    • Performs work involving the application of all conventional aspects of civil/structural engineering to the functional area of the assignment.

    • Experience preparing design calculations and design documents (plans and specifications.

    • Good verbal communications and technical writing skills.



    • Conceptualizes the initial engineering design approach for major phases of projects or has production management responsibility (not responsible charge) for the civil/structural engineering work on a project of limited scope.

    • Resolves a variety of complex problems, (i.e. conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, difficult coordination requirements).

    • Able to prepare a complete set of plans and growing in ability to manage and supervise the design and ongoing progress of a project, including the coordination of the project with the project team and other constituents.


    Prepare schedules; conducts or coordinates civil/structural engineering work.



    • Review plans and prepares or reviews technical specifications, contract documents, and estimates.

    • Participates in contract bidding and administration.

    • Maintains close contact with the client throughout development of the project design and drawings

    • May be asked to travel to out of town assignments

    • Project Administration:


      • Billing

      • Proposal Writing



    • Pre-Design Phase:

    o Assist with the development of the project program


    o Assemble resource data, i.e., existing drawings, etc.


    o Assist with preparation of work scope and proposals for services.


    o Assist with preparation of overall project schedule (Project start-up/Kick-off meeting)/timeline and in-house construction budgets by group responsibility


    o Set up and maintain plan file storage


    • Design/Contract Document Phase:

    o Attend consultant meetings as required


    o Provide code review and resolution of problem areas


    o Provide submittals to local/state/federal agencies


    o Provide assistance with completion of work per project schedule


    • Bidding Phase:

    o Issuing of bidding documents


    o GC inquiries during bidding


    o Preparation and distribution of addenda


    o Maintaining record drawings


    o Storage and filing of project contract documents


    • Construction Phase:

    o Research as needed on proposed changes and GC inquiries


    o Preparation and distribution of contract modifications


    o Research on technical or contract document questions


    o Performs site visits and generates deficiency reports



Qualifications



    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed above are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


    Education and Experience:


    Bachelor's Degree in Structural/Civil Engineering or related field required. Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam.


    Possess at least four (4) years of experience in site development preferred.


    Skills and Abilities:


    • Successful as a Project Engineer


    • Demonstrated ability to work accurately, follow procedures and schedules, and prioritize multiple tasks

    • Demonstrated ability and aptitude to manage both projects and people.

    • Demonstrated ability to communicate with outside entities including project team and other stakeholders.

    • Experience preparing design calculations and design documents (plans and specifications).

    • Experience with all the following: pavement designs, roadways and demolition, surveying, and construction support services.

    • High degree of sensitivity and ability to maintain confidential client and employee information

    • Works with minimal supervision

    • Proficiency with all MS Office products (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Project, Adobe or Blue Beam)

    • Ability to work in a team environment and fit in with company culture and processes

    • Effective professional oral and written communication skills

    • Must possess a strong work ethic and values that are above-reproach

    • Strong organizational, interpersonal skills

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:



  • Standard office environment.

  • Sedentary physical workload; must be able to exert up to a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; required to have a close visual acuity to perform activities such as viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading; specific physical requirements include, but are not limited to, sitting, walking, talking, hearing and performing repetitive motions.
