General Summary

Gas Technology Institute (GTI), the nation’s leading research, development, deployment, and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for an experienced scientist or engineer in our Energy Delivery research group.  The qualified candidate will act as a Principal Scientist or Principal Engineer and will participate in research efforts surrounding air quality emissions and leak detection.  The individual will collaborate with individuals within the renewable energy, emissions, and environment group as well as support cross-cutting research efforts within the energy industry.


 
Location

The position reports to the Manager, Projects of the Energy Delivery group and will report to GTI’s Des Plaines, Illinois headquarters.


 
Primary Responsibilities

Help with coordination and collaboration on research projects and initiatives for the Energy Delivery group at GTI.  This includes developing specific workplans to execute research spanning early-stage technology development to validation and integrated demonstrations at scale. This individual will often times serve as the sole principal investigator on research projects, technical studies, lab testing, and field investigations.  The position will also require engagement with a broad set of industry stakeholders and the ability to work with public and private partnerships.


Below is a high-level overview of some of the primary responsibilities:

  • Design and implement research projects to advance gaseous energy systems emission detection and leak quantification

  • Coordinate with other technical areas of focus such as data and risk management and digital technology into integrated emissions and leak quantification R&D

  • Support the development and management of project budgets, project timelines, resource plans, and success metrics

  • Ability to manage and communicate complex technical and applied research. Strong experience and technical background in core research areas is essential.

  • Facilitates collaborations with academia, government, and corporations, including coordination with intellectual property legal personnel and technology licensing personnel.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

  • Background includes data analysis, statistics, and programming language (Python or R)

  • Ability to identify customer needs and assist with idea filtering and concept development

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in a cross-functional format

  • Experience with the design and management of technology field demonstrations and pilots

  • Ability to translate technical information into a format that is understandable and valuable to a broad range of stakeholders

  • Results and detailed oriented

  • Self-directed, self-motivated, adaptive, and comfortable in a dynamic environment

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including writing and delivering technical proposals, reports, and presentations

 
Education and Experience

  • Bachelors/Masters Degree in an engineering or science field; advanced degree preferred

  • Prior work experience in the natural gas/energy industry operations is desired

  • Experimental and field research experience is a plus
