This position is responsible for Computer Aided Design (CAD) and development of new primary packaging and mechanical delivery systems for dental restorative products that improve the efficiency of dental procedures and the application of restorative materials. Under limited supervision, they will create product layouts and prepare assembly and detailed drawings, with guidance from R&D Engineers, Scientists and Managers. The incumbent will develop unique mechanical designs and will assist in reviewing and providing feedback on designs from technical team members. The CAD Designer will analyze assemblies for form, fit and function including tolerances and interference using engineering reference materials and software. This person will also be responsible for creating and maintaining material specifications, bill-of-materials and performing other related work as required.
Key Responsibilities:
This position reports to the Senior R&D Manager, Delivery Systems at the Global Innovation Center, a new state of the art R&D facility for developing professional dental products
Creates complex part designs, layouts, detail and assembly drawings for new or existing products, test equipment, tools, fixtures, gauges, etc.
Understands complex mechanical and electro/mechanical systems and schematics
Proficient to expert drafting skills with 3-D modeling software: SolidWorks, ProE or similar software
Proficient drafting skills with 2-D modeling software: AutoCAD
Analyze various design requirements, recommends possible solutions or alternate constructions
Uses 3D printers to generate models for engineering, clinical and marketing analysis
Works with 3rd party service bureaus to obtain rapid prototypes and tooling when required
Creates 2D photo realistic renderings for presentations and evaluation
Prepares all drawings and changes in accordance with divisional standards and procedures
Able to evaluate materials, parts, and products for use in new or existing designs
Prepares written reports and memoranda as needed to fulfill assignments
Manages a drawing and part number system and creates specification documents
Implement and manage design changes through the Dentsply Quality System
Basic knowledge of engineering math including trigonometry, basic algebra and engineering handbook calculations
Solid understanding of 3D drafting techniques including complex surfaces and motion analysis
Assists Engineers design, develop, and create test protocols for testing new product designs
Advanced knowledge of geometric tolerancing to ANSI Y14.5 standards
Proficient with dimensioning parts and assemblies as well as geometric tolerancing and analysis
Plan and prepare preliminary layouts and detailed design drawings from engineering notes, sketches or other drawings
Participate in cross functional teams that investigate new product ideas and failure analysis
Able to recommend cost savings with new materials, designs or assembly procedures
Obtains quotations for materials, tooling and sample materials from outside suppliers
Identifies potential suppliers for new materials and processes
Assists with design reviews and provides feedback to cross-functional teams
Presents design options and technical data in report form or PowerPoint presentations
Maintains knowledge of current developments in CAD, mechanical design, and product technology.
Working knowledge of plastic materials, properties, part design, mold construction and gating technologies
Working knowledge of machined metal components and fasteners
Working knowledge of various methods of joining similar and dissimilar materials for assembly
Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines and be flexible when priorities change
Experience with medical products preferred
Aids other functional departments in support of new product development and research
Other duties as assigned
Background and Experience Required:
Education:
Associate Degree in Engineering or related field; with significant experience in Computer Aided Drafting and Design.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in product development, mechanical design or R&D
Demonstrated ability to independently create complex mechanical designs and assemblies
Experienced skills in designing injection molded parts
Demonstrated ability to work with 3rd party suppliers
Experience transitioning from design concept to finished design, including layouts, tolerance analysis and detail drawings
Familiarity with electrical and mechanical components and symbols
The ability to evaluate electromechanical systems, read and interpret schematics and drawings
Working knowledge of MS Office suite, (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.) or similar software packages for recording/retrieving data and preparing reports
Good communication skills, both orally and written, at all levels of an organization
Good organizational skills
Attention to detail and appreciation of deadlines
Ability to prioritize projects
