Job Description:

Job Summary:



Seeking a qualified Physician Assistant to join a growing surgical team at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, an affiliate of Mass General Brigham. Under the clinical supervision of the Chief of Surgery, the PA oversees and participates in the care of patients in multiple clinical settings. This is primarily an inpatient position managing patients on the surgical floor, with a small role assisting in the OR and seeing patients in the post-operative clinic. It is the responsibility of the PA to participate in daily rounds, document medical plans by writing daily notes, perform initial evaluations of surgical patients, coordinate and participate in treatment plans, and monitor patient progress.



Essential Functions:



  • Complete individual daily rounds on all surgical inpatients and document medical plan by writing daily notes.

  • Works collaboratively with house staff and takes direction from senior house staff or senior resident on specific patient care duties.

  • Performs initial evaluation of surgical patients and documents comprehensive health histories and physical examinations.

  • Presents and discusses the findings of the initial evaluation with the surgeon and/or house staff to determine the treatment plan.



  • Documents the treatment plan and writes appropriate orders.

  • Reviews results of laboratory and other diagnostic tests and formulates an interpretation.

  • Conducts minor procedures (under the direction and supervision of the Attending Physician) including: nasogastric tubes, bladder catheters, minor wound debridement and removal of drains, chest tubes, repair of lacerations, and I&D of abscesses.

  • Provides first-level response to acute patient complications and emergencies and initiates appropriate measures.

  • Participates in the discharge planning process at the point of admission and throughout the patient's hospitalization.

  • Educates, instructs and counsels patients and families. Provides psychological, emotional and informational support to patients and families. Communicates patient needs to appropriate team members.



  • Orients medical and PA students, physician assistants, and residents to the environment, patient care practices, and hospital policies and procedures.

  • Participates in weekly outpatient surgical clinic as needed.

  • Attends Surgical Grand Rounds and additional CME lectures each week.

  • Performs such other duties as requested from time to time by the Chair of Surgery as he or she may deem reasonable and necessary for the efficient maintenance of quality of care at the Hospital.

  • Functions as first or second assistant in the operating room as necessary, serving as backup to interns and residents.

  • Accepts responsibility and accountability for his/her actions in delivering patient care.

  • Collaborates and communicates effectively and establishes good rapport with all levels of personnel.



  • Assures compliance with all mandated review functions.






Qualifications

Qualifications:





  • Graduate of an approved Physician Assistant program.

  • Evidence of continued education and professional development.

  • Must have current valid Massachusetts license and be prescriptive eligible.

  • BLS / ACLS certifications required.

  • 2-3 years of experience preferred, will accept new graduates on a case-by-case basis
