Job Description



Primary Function of Position:



The Animal Health Technologist is responsible for the care and maintenance of animate and inanimate models before, during and after laboratory sessions. They work closely with the Director, clinical veterinarian and other laboratory staff to support customer training programs.




Roles & Responsibilities:




· Anesthesia Assistance:


o Administration of anesthesia: induction, maintenance, and emergent management


o Sets up anesthesia machines and monitoring equipment for specific surgeries


o Animal care and surgical preparation under veterinarian supervision including vascular access and monitoring, sedation, intubation, and other skills


o Intraoperative monitoring of vital statistics, fluids, drug administration, surgical interventions


· Laboratory Support:


o Maintain a clean and safe surgical working environment


o Support customer training and product development activities


o Assist and instructs contract animal health technologists


o Participate in animal care review meetings and support development of standard operating procedures in area of knowledge


· Maintenance and Inventory:


o Maintains inventory of surgical and pharmaceutical supplies


o Maintains anesthesia records pre-, intra-, and post-operatively


o Arranges major repairs for anesthesia equipment


o Performs routine maintenance and repairs for anesthesia equipment


Qualifications



Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:



  • Minimum 1 year experience in veterinary anesthesia and surgical procedures

  • Experience working with research animals preferred

  • Minimum Associates or Bachelor's degree preferred

  • Knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, medical disease states, surgical applications

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Skill with large animal care and emergency care techniques

  • Experience with surgical preparation and operative monitoring required

  • Ability to lift 50 lb
