PURPOSE:

The IT Business Intelligence (BI) Engineer Senior role is responsible for creating and maintaining reporting, analytics and custom data solutions leveraged to drive data-driven decision making across the business, as well as contribute to projects and initiatives delivering data solutions for external customers. This role is accountable for using and implementing a variety of technology tools to provide operational reporting, data visualization solutions, and advanced analytics (e.g., machine learning, artificial intelligence) to the enterprise.  The BI Engineer Senior role achieves team and individual goals that align with broader


 


 

IT goals and support the achievement of UNFI’s strategic imperatives.

•   Architects, designs, and builds analytical and data reporting solutions to deliver actionable insights by leveraging cloud-based tools and ensures appropriate documentation and artifacts exist for ongoing maintenance and operation activities

•   Collaborates with diverse stakeholders to develop models and metrics providing insights for enterprise functions (e.g., supply chain, logistics, finance)

•   Models abstract/complex problems and discover insights using statistics, data mining, and visualization techniques

•   Implements BI engineering and data visualization best practices and executes on continuous improvement initiatives for enterprise analytics and reporting

•   Mentors junior BI engineers in technical best practices and proper documentation techniques

•   Triages and communicates issues impacting data solutions, project execution, and solution delivery

•   Collaborates with data engineering and database administration teams on data management standards, data acquisition, data modeling, and performance tuning

•   Adheres to department standards, guidelines, and data engineering and data visualization methodologies for all assigned tasks and mentors others in their use

•   Understands project management methodology and leads resource planning, estimation, and responsibility assignment processes

•   Leads and guides other team members in data solutioning and problem-solving activities

•   Stays abreast of emerging technologies and trends in Data Management, Data Engineering, and Advanced Analytics disciplines to drive innovation into the organization

•    Performs other duties as assigned

•    Coach and mentor team members and technical staff on their assigned project

JOB REQUIREMENTS:


 

Education/ Certifications: (Required/Preferred-list requirement is required or preferred)

•    Bachelor’s degree in the field of data science, computer science, information systems, or software engineering, or equivalent

work-related experience required

Experience:

•   6+ years of quantitative data analysis, complex problem solving, and successful business intelligence, analytical and reporting solution delivery experience required

•   3+ years of data visualization technology implementation and maintenance experience required (e.g., Tableau, QuickSight, Power BI, etc.)

•    Proficient in data mining and data modeling tools (e.g., SQL, SAS, Python, etc.)

•    Possesses expert knowledge of data design, coding, unit testing and documentation

Knowledge:

•   In-depth knowledge of data engineering, data warehousing, ETL, data visualization, business intelligence and reporting standards, and cloud-based technologies to support these areas

•    In-depth knowledge of data mining, forecasting, predictive modeling, simulation, and scenario analysis

•    Strong knowledge of advanced analytical capabilities (e.g., machine learning, artificial intelligence)

•    Strong knowledge of data security and privacy principals

•    Strong knowledge of Wholesale, Retail, Transportation, Distribution or Manufacturing industry preferred

•    Strong knowledge of Agile/iterative SDLC methodology

Skills/ Abilities:

•   Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong customer focus and interpersonal skills, with the demonstrated ability to work in geographically dispersed teams

•    Ability to manage competing priorities

•    Ability to apply logical thought process and learn new systems, concepts, and procedures

•   Demonstrate strong critical thinking, analytical, and conceptual skills used to define technical needs and solve technical problems

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT/ DEMANDS:

•    Some travel may be required

•    Most work is performed in a temperature-controlled office environment

•    Incumbent may sit for long periods of time at desk or computer terminal

•   While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear

•    Incumbent may use calculators, keyboards, telephone, and other office equipment in the course of normal workday
