The Public Health Microbiology Trainer is responsible for both providing both didactic and laboratory bench training to develop and maintain the workforce for the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Laboratories and California Public Health Laboratory Network. Training includes conducting a series of courses to meet the State of California requirements for Public Health Microbiologist certification and related topics to maintain laboratory workforce safety, shipping certification and competency requirements and developing new training for COVID-19 laboratory testing.
The scope of training includes Laboratory Safety, Virology (including COVID-19), Serology, Molecular Testing, Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Environmental Microbiology, and Laboratory Regulations.
Part-time and full-time positions available.
Salary range: $39.22 to $43.26 an hour

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Works closely with internal and external partners to develop and present curricula required for workforce training.
Develops and presents lectures and laboratory training modules.
Develops, updates, proctors, and grades unit exams, quizzes, laboratory practical, and other PHM trainee course work.
Recruits subject matter experts as volunteer speakers and bench trainers.
Identifies and orders needed training supplies, media, reagents, protective personal equipment (PPE), and lab equipment for training.
Checks, maintains, and organizes lab and training inventory.
Develops assessment tools and mentoring strategies.
Provides timely and appropriate feedback to trainees.
Assists in updating rosters, schedules, access requests, and submitting required forms.
Serves as or identifies and recruits subject matter experts for all training components and provides technical expertise for developing new training components, including COVID-19.
Works with staff to develop and update appropriate instructional materials for local and statewide use.
Applies knowledge of biosafety to implement appropriate safeguards for required in-person instruction modules.
Develops distance learning modules for COVID-19 and other training subjects and assists with their implementation and evaluation.
Builds a library of recorded laboratory procedure training videos.
Participates in the review and updating of training policy and procedures.
Manages and organizes electronic training document sites to be accessible to trainees and instructors.
Provides laboratory orientation and ensures compliance with laboratory procedures and policies.
Maintains technical knowledge, expertise and troubleshooting skills by review of the literature, consultation with peers, internet searches and other activities as directed.
Communicates information in a timely manner and participates in projects to improve the training program.
Provides training program reports and documents as requested to CDPH and Public Health Laboratory leadership to meet agency and grant requirements and deadlines.

Experience working for a public health program, funded prevention agency or community-based organization
Experience working with online learning software, designing effective lessons and learning assessments
Skill in video learning content creation and editing

Education/Experience
Possession of Bachelor’s degree in a related area, required.
Advanced degree in public health, science, communications, or related field, preferred.
At least 4 years of relevant work experience.
Experience as a trainer in a public health field or working in a public health, clinical or environmental laboratory preferred.
Certificates/Licenses/Clearances
Public Health Microbiologist certificate, required.
Will consider limited CLS, CLS, ASCP (M), and other related clinical license.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This is a hybrid remote position and will be required to work at the campus in Richmond, CA in a General Office Setting, Laboratory setting, Indoors Temperature Controlled.
Essential workforce training may be up to 40 hours per week on site in Richmond, CA
Must have functioning internet access at remote location.
