Position Summary:

Tenure-Track Assistant Professor with a terminal degree in Reading, Literacy, or Literacy Education, as well as instructional experience in teaching reading. Position will be responsible for teaching Master's and Specialist level coursework in an online Reading program leading to K-12 Reading Specialist teacher licensure, undergraduate courses in reading and elementary education (including foundations of reading, reading assessment and methods), and supervision of internships. Emphasis in emergent and early literacy is highly desired. This full-time faculty position is a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor

The Department of Teacher Education, in The School of Teacher Education and Leadership at Arkansas State University, offers a wide array of undergraduate and graduate degrees and programs to serve today's aspiring educators and educator-leaders. All programs are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation. All programs that lead to earning a certificate by Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) are fully approved by the State Board of Education. ADE accredits all teacher certification programs at Arkansas State University

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teaching graduate level Reading coursework, or possibly some undergraduate graduate course work in Reading or Elementary Education
  • Development of new online Reading coursework and contribution to ongoing program data collection
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with Evidence-Based Teaching Strategies or Competencies
  • Teaching traditionally on-site, as well as web-assisted or Canvas-based online courses
  • Possible supervision of student teaching interns in the field
  • Engage in active scholarship leading to academic conference presentation and peer-reviewed publication
  • Providing university, college, and department level service, as well as to the community and public schools
  • Provide leadership in using technology in literacy instruction
  • Assisting with departmental initiatives, including recruiting and academic advisement
  • Other duties as assigned


Knowledge of current initiatives and issues in public education, particularly emergent and early reading/literacy will be expected

The ability to integrate technology into classroom instruction is essential

General Days/Hours:

Faculty will work a typical M-F work week that includes teaching courses and maintaining active office hours on the Arkansas State University (Jonesboro) campus; however, night, weekend classes or other activities may be required

Travel may be required

An understanding of Arkansas' state reading initiatives, beginning reading skills (such as phonics and phonemic awareness), and reading disabilities such as dyslexia, and the science of reading are preferred

Teaching experience and the ability to work with diverse students, staff, and faculty populations is desired. Experience with current state standards and reading/literacy initiatives is also preferred

Minimum Qualifications:

A terminal degree in Reading, Literacy, or Literacy Education

Three or more (3+) years of documented, successful teaching experience as a classroom teacher of reading/literacy or as a reading/literacy teacher (preferred in grades K-8)

Has met or is willing to complete AR DESE Reading Proficiency Pathway requirements upon hiring
